This video is really helpful!!! however I am facing an issue in applying this theory in analysing some verbless clauses , for instance "Ready! for another coronation... how can we determine the theme of this sentence ? I am really grateful for the hard work you put in simplifying these lessons
@seansutherland2 ай бұрын
The theme is 'Are you', as this is an elliptical clause which is interpreted by listeners as "Are you ready for another coronation?", right? Good luck.

Sir, what is the difference between personal reference and substitution "same" ? (because they're all presuppose the entire nominal group)
@luongbaongoc235 ай бұрын
Sir, it would be wonderful to have you explain my question: Is it like 2 ways to categorize reference? 1st way: personal, demonstrative, comparative and 2nd way: reference inside and outside the text or all of these are 5 types of reference?
@seansutherland4 ай бұрын
Personal, demonstrative and comparative references can all refer to something inside the text (this is endophoric reference) or outside the text (this is exophoric reference).

Greetings, I'm Dafele Arozal. Thank you for the fruitful textual metafunction discussion. The textual meta function is a linguistic discussion of how texts are organized. The theme is the first element of a clause, which can be a word or a phrase, and it is what controls the choice of theme for subsequent clauses. The theme is not the same as the literary theme, which refers to the overall message of a novel or film. Rather, the theme in textual meta function refers to the organization of a clause. We expect themes to contain old information or previously given information, which makes a connection to something that came earlier in the text. The connection must be semantically meaningful and not too far back in the text, or else the reader may lose track of the organization. The textual meta function is important for understanding how texts are structured and how to effectively communicate information. The discussion of theme allows us to see how each clause is organized in relation to what came before, which controls the choice of theme for subsequent clauses. There are rules or patterns that govern what we put first in a clause, and we follow these patterns when we speak or write, even if we are not aware of them. The theme is the first element of the clause, and it can be marked or unmarked depending on whether it is the same as the subject. The textual meta function is important for understanding how texts are structured and how to effectively communicate information. By understanding the rules and patterns that govern the choice of theme, we can create well-organized and effective texts. In a story for children, it is important to keep the organization simple and not too complicated. By following the patterns of textual meta function, we can create stories that are easy for children to follow and understand.

Hi im Muhammad Raihan Adi Madana, The first word or phrase of a clause is called the subject in the meta-text function. This element serves as the starting point for the message and places the clause in context. Additionally, the subject is not always the subject of the clause, and the choice of topic is influenced by information provided in previous clauses, which helps keep the text cohesive. Lexical coherence is used to build logical organization in a text, while sharpness helps distinguish between expected and unexpected elements in a particular context in linguistics. To judge whether a topic is marked or not, one must first determine what comes first and whether it is a topic or not. However, the arrangement of clauses can change the impact and emphasis of the text. Understanding thematic conventions and meta-functions of writing can help you improve your writing and communication skills.
