Would any of those caps you changed affect tweeter performance? I just scooped a pair and already know the caps need changing.

Could you possibly send me a guide on how to replace the electrolytic caps. I just recently got some TF700's and wanted to get it recapped as it's been sitting for a long while in a studio. Thanks!@@HomeTheatre101

I recently found an old JVC-400 receiver for cheap. Everything was working when I got it. The other day the LCD screen went dark. I am handy at refurbishing electronics but this one is complex. Is this a common problem? Any idea on how to troubleshoot and repair?

I have a receiver that turns on and does not emit sound, if I increase the volume with the control it makes pac at each touch. I have no idea about electronics, but I was researching and it has transistors 2SB1429 first in green and 2SD2155 in black, I'm afraid they are burnt and are no longer available.

I have the same preamplifier. I decided not to modify with different part. This preamplifier was made back to deliver certain tonal characteristic back when it was made with the parts available that period. If anyone changes parts, that particular sound charateristic will be gone for good. I know by upgrading with today's higher quality parts will make the preamp sounds much more sharp, clear, precise and overall better but that's not the original sound the originally creator intended back then. The only part I will consider modifying is upgrading the power supply with better rectifier and 3 cans of electrolytic capacitors for safety reason.

Hello OldTechFan: What sonically changed with the capacitor upgrade? What is the "best" capacitor to use for the "best" change/upgrade? I see people use Russian paper-and-oil caps is guitars and guitar amps, etc. There has to be a Holy Grail cap for speaker crossovers. Thank you in advance.

How about 42 years without repairs? My Marantz has been just idling, diving a pair of very efficient speakers to concert levels (1 watt input=102 decibels @ 1 meter) Dust-off and de-oxide controls is all I've done and, oh yes, LED display lights to reduce internal heat and reduce power consumption. I'll keep you in mind, should I experience trouble. Knock on wood! Good video, though.

(2:45) You can also see one of the infamous DCM aluminum core inductor coils here. Seems that aluminum does indeed have some slight ferrous properties. Just enough that Steve E. and crew would use it when an air core wasn't enough, but an iron core would have been way too much.

Yeah, they sure went nuts with that adhesive! I'm currently rebuilding two Time Window 1A crossovers which I will be mounting in shadowboxes so you can admire the engineering. The thing is, I have to use the original inductor coils because I think they were hand wound. It would be impossible to find ones off the shelf that would match exactly. But, man, that glue! Fortunately, the 1A crossovers aren't as crowded as the TF-700s were. It pops right off with a knife. I guess they saved a lot of labor by gluing every damn thing together (which they couldn't really do with the backs of the 700s), but it sure makes DCM speakers a PAIN to work on. Again, thanks for uploading this! :)

(4:17) It depends on what kind of driver it's connected to. If they used a different one later on that is probably what warranted the value change. Steve Eberbach and company pretty much flew by the seats of their pants back then, so it would be interesting to see if they swapped out a driver for a different one. Time Windows come to mind, when Phillips stopped making speaker drivers and they switched to Vifa (now Peerless/Tymphany). However, it's likely you won't notice such a small difference without actually measuring the frequency response, so it's all good. :) I had these exact speakers in the late 80s and even had the backs off. Very cool to see the inside again. Thanks for posting! :)

A question, I just recapped the amp board on my 2220b. It powers up but if I turn up volume past 1/4 the protect relay trips out.i used the ELNA Silmic ll because I was assured they are low leakage? What did you use on your low leakage caps.
@OldTechFan
@OldTechFan 6 жыл бұрын
Yes they are low leakage and suitable for your application. Often times after a recap other problems get uncovered. First double check your work and make sure all caps are in with correct polarity. Next I would check your supply voltages. If those are good I would suspect high dc offset due to aging differential pairs or even driver or pre driver transistors. A service manual is going to be needed and can be downloaded from the internet. Good luck.

Also check your idle current. And as in my video make sure the bias diode is alive and does not have a bad connection.

Very good advise .............polarity of capacitors hahaha , yes i've seen these errors ! Do the same and work in steps and control after every work . These amps sound fine with a job well done ............i heard to often restored ( good old ) amplifiers sound bad after a recap with inadequate or huge oversized caps. The output capacitors if still good , i leave them to preserve the original sound . ( they are not under the same stress as the filter capacitors and often age well .) Thanks for sharing ....

We have a jvc rx -309tn with just 2 stock speakers on it at work in the shop. Well one day we came in and the tweeters work on both speakers but the woofers that are in the same boxes do not. So speakers have no bass just tremble. Have any clue what could be wrong?

Hello I have a jvc RX805 vtn similar to the one you are fixing. I have it since 1993 a long long time.. but recently stop working. I replaced the fuze 3 times but as soon as I power the fuze burns. I was told to change the capacitors, but I am not shure what capacitors the power suply capacitors or the capacitors for the audio section? I'd appreciate if you can give me a tip. Thanks
@OldTechFan

My bets are on shorted output transistors. Capacitors rarely cause dead shorts that blow fuses like that in solid state gear. Could also be bad power supply regulator or diode.

Well at least you got a discount, I have argued with my local Goodwill to give me a discount on stuff that doesn't work. They just say oh well if something doesn't work bring it back and exchange it. I tried to explain I'd take it as is and try to repair it. At least the store makes a little money instead of it getting tossed into the recycle bin.
