I'm my own enemy. I don't know what the triggers are but it's not my environment. I don't know why I can't bring myself to study and its something I chose to do, need to do but I'm failing myself. No one else is going to be affected if I fail except me. I'm not competing with anyone and no one is throwing me off course. This one exam if passed will change my whole life...give me an automatic new impressive job title, entitle me to more money and here I am with all the resources and time in the world and like an idiot, I'm failing myself. I ask myself a hundred times a day what the problem is and draw a blank.

Thank you so much, Marshall. :D I've learned a lot from this. As of this writing, this video now has 41,608 views but only 8 comments. People are way too busy moving from one video to another without even saying "thank:P It's not required anyway, but where's common courtesy here? :D Mabuhay from Makati City, Philippines!

Hi Marshall and Mark, I agree! As someone who facilitates Leadership Programs, I ensure that I have done all that I ask of the participants. It means that when I make them uncomfortable, I have gone through that discomfort myself. One of the ways I do it is to get someone else to hold me accountable in addition to my personal commitment, otherwise I may never get around to doing it myself! Change is tough. Sometimes one can be the driver of change and other times, we just have to be able to deal with change when it happens (we can't all be drivers of change all the time, can we?) - possibly by the ability to undecide a decision that is impacted by the change. Good discussion indeed!

It always baffles me when I see "leaders" who don't engage their employees' strengths, but rather, pigeon-hole them into mediocrity so they essentially become replaceable cogs. Can you speak to this? How can we encourage the big bosses to appreciate our unique talents and utilize them? It feels good to contribute in a way that accounts for my individual strengths and frustrating when I offer to work "outside the box" and am continually shot down.

Appreciate your thoughts and guided questions. My 95 year old me would add, why not be more spiritual, knowing God much earlier in my life, would have allowed me to do the top 3 things you mentioned. Thank you.

I don't know that I agree you should have an exit strategy before you start a job, the opportunities and the demands of which you probably don't fully comprehend until you spend time in the position, but once you start to think about leaving any position it's inevitable that your level of investment in the position weakens and you are no longer single-mindedly committed to the job. Dragging out an "elective" transition of this type is not healthy, either for you or for the organization. If you know you want to leave, or will leave at the "right" time, making the decision sooner rather than later is best for your psyche and for the position you are leaving.

Arrogance is one of the worst ways to get things done. It's one thing to be assertive and have self worth, it's another to climb to the top by stepping on and crushing others. Remember the higher you build your throne, the harder the fall will be when your empire crumbles. Striving for humbleness is better for the long run. For he who lives by the sword also dies by the sword.
