Merci Steve.

All very cerebral without any heart and soul. Too repetitive by far.

From what I understand, Andriessen's original Ensemble Hoketus played this absolutely ferociously, played it from memory, and played it VERY loud. Almost as if it were heavy metal. Here's a recording of their version - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/psecd9p41c2XfXk.html - but of course it can't really capture the effect a live performance would have had. Would that have had "heart and soul"? Maybe. Depends upon your definition. But its real intention seems to have been power and intensity. And the thought of this blasting back and forth at you from widely separated PA systems at the front corners of a hall, or from opposite sides of a public square - well, that's going to get a reaction, and it won't be boredom.
