Cutting a smal notch out of underside to allow for a sharper bend might be the solution, but is slightly risky. Maybe try that next year at the start of the growing season?

For me the advantages of pruning when the buds are swelling are: - Old leaves are falling off by themselves usually by that time - You know which branches died off and cannot be counted with in their areas - In case that tree suffered some during the winter, wiring and bending branches before you know they are allright might do some more harm That is why I rather wait till I see the branches and buds clearly

:D Each to their own or how they say it :) The older I am the more I prefer smaller trees myself, but considering Field maple has huge leaves even when ramified, the bigger the better to maintain the nicer proportions. Shohin field maple would look rather ridiculous I think.

Ahoj Jano, som milo prekvapený že to niekto dopozeral do konca :D Aj že má toto video tolko zhliadnutí. Čakal som že to moje mumlanie hodinove bude mega nezaživne a pre väčšinu určite stále je, ale fakt som chcel ukázať ako postupujem pri tvarovaní. Ani ja nie som žiadný profík čo stále vie na 100 pro čo robí, no nejaké tie skúsenosti za tých 9 rokov intenzívneho štúdia, pestovania a tvarovania už mám a rád by som sa o ne podelil. Trafil si presne môj preferovaný predok stromu a dúfam že sa mu budem vedieť povenovať frézkou toto leto, aj ked momentálne mam rozbehnutých tolko vecí že....škoda reči :D Kludne si ma pridaj na fasbuku ak chceš byť v kontakte, nemám s tým žiadny problém :) A veľká vďaka za pozretie :) Maj sa pekne.

I was just removing dead part of the side of the trunk and inner deadwood - heartwood. And pruning branches won't kill established tree, there is still many of them and this tree would be fine even if I left only one :-)
