Hi! Great question. This really depends on how well the water going through the UV is being prefiltered. Usually, with good filtration, you need to get into the sterilizer 1-2 a year. If there's dirty or hard water the quartz sleeve may need to be serviced more often.

Do i have to add minerals or anything else to the ro water before i mix it with my treated tap water
@carlstrohmeyer
@carlstrohmeyer 20 күн бұрын
If only adding RO to "cut" tap water, the answer is usually no. But this depends upon how much RO to Tap you are using, your Tap water numbers, and what you are trying to achieve in the end. Adding a fresh AAP Wonder Shell at 1/4 dose would likely be helpful either way, if only for the mineral Cations. I suggest reading this article for more as your question has no easy one size fits all answer: www.americanaquariumproducts.com/chemistry.html

I got Melafix because my fish was not well, I treated him for 7 days but he seems to got worse, even stopped eating. Then I mixed this instant Japanese yellow powder that I got on eBay for £5 or so and probably even a knock off I don't know (bought it earlier but never tried as looked like a child's candy ) fish started eating after 5 min after being in the water with yellow powder... He changed instantly!

Melafix is way over sold and then often cited as harmful just because it was used improperly. Melafix is a first aid treatment PERIOD! Reference: www.americanaquariumproducts.com/medication-4.html As for the yellow powder you got, it seems to be a safe and fresh batch. Beware that often what is sold in these mass markets is not fresh and even not pure. I would suggest the AAP version in the future, as they also ship to the UK too.

My Betta died from columnaris about a month ago. His tank has been sitting empty ever since and still cycling. I’ve turned the temperature way down while it doesn’t have fish in it. Can you tell me what do I need to do to this tank to make it safe to put a new fish in it? I can’t seem to get a straight answer anywhere. People are suggesting I throw all the plants, substrate, driftwood and everything away, empty the tank and bleach it? That seems extreme to me especially considering I know that the bacteria is always in water to begin with ? Like I said it’s been sitting here without Fish in it for over a month. Should I just keep cycling at for a while and do water changes? Would that work so that I can add a new fish to it soon? I appreciate any help you can give me!
@AmericanAquariumInformation
@AmericanAquariumInformation Ай бұрын
Good question. These type of bacteria along with others are always present in the aquarium technically. You can add fish back in, just keep in mind that different stressor can effect fish including genetics that make the fish get the disease. More important is to limit the stressor outlined in the article in the description. This all said assuming that the tank has had good husbandry. Leaving a tank empty is more for parasite infections that need a host to survive.

Hmm. I'm trying to understand the question. I'm thinking it's a filter box with a port for a UV lamp? If so, likely the uv will not destroy the walls as the lamp is further away from the walls, so it shouldn't degrade.

If it's not hard plastic the UV can degrade the plastic. Many filter boxes are made for UV with a port, but are hard. This is technically a very poor way of using UVc anyway with barly giving clarification. Highly recommend an inline UV like the TMC or Evolution Aqua brand from AAP.

Hello, I have a 36 gallon tank with a mix of fish. Cherry barbs, angle fish, glo tetras, snails etc. I have three fish that have bloat/dropsy. The gourami currently is the worst case. It has gradually gotten larger to now where the scales are popped out. One cherry barb is starting to swim nose down and one glo tetra is very skinny with a curved back. That one is having a hard time staying upright. I have lost a few others to this where I would just find them very bloated deceased. Before this started, I have another tank with a breeding pair of angels. I kept two of the babies and put them in this tank that now has the issue. (I really don't want this to attack them). I really need to find a treatment for this before I lose all of the fish. Any ideas would be great. I do not have an extra tank as a quarantine tank. But since this seems to be a reoccurring issue in this tank, I feel treating the entire tank would be better. I really appreciate any guidance you can provide!! Lisa

@carlstrohmeyer
@carlstrohmeyer 2 ай бұрын
No, especially no when used with oolitic sand. But then there are few cases where you would want to lower water hardness as most ways of lowering water hardness dangerously lowers mineral Cations necessary for a healthy aquarium. Best, if truly needed, would simply be when changing water to mix new tap water with RO or RO/DI water. But again, with a few exceptions the need to lower water hardness is often an internet myth. @@davelanteigne2842 As I stated above, I usually cut the tap water with RO water (sometimes I used 100% RO and added back what was needed). However I have to respectfully disagree that it is beneficial to remove Calcium and magnesium. Yes, some in hard water, but in nature, which is an open system, unlike the closed system of an aquarium, mineral Cations are constantly added by natural means and to strip them out of an aquarium, even for discus is not healthy for the long term. You mention CO2 production at the end.... how much? How does this change the CO2 amount needed for planted aquariums?
@devontrigg517
@devontrigg517 7 ай бұрын
Hi there. We have not tested this and will reach out for more info. From our understanding, it's very minimal. But it's something that helps stabilize co2. It's also not enough for someone that doesn't have plants to be concerned about. Here's some the manufacturer. "The average dose rate of UV on the Vecton 850 at 100Gph is around 46000 mJ/cm2. At 60Gph it would be 77000 mJ/cm2. There are two things to note here: This calculation doesn’t take into account the reflectance of the Titan lining - it is based on the UV-C emitted from the lamp and the depth and velocity of water it is treating. It assumes clear water (98% transmittance). The oxidising action of the lining (production of Hydroxyl radicals) is a photo-chemical reaction that happens almost instantaneously on the active surface, and this adds to the sterilisation - it is not measurable in itself, but our studies (both our own and independent) show that it increases reduction of pathogens significantly. We publish 30%, but some studies show much more than that.
