I find very little evidence of ground effect at all, particularly in how it should tend to keep you level by the low side of the rotor disk being pushed up more than the high side. But yes, it does like to dynamic rollover. Like any helicopter, once the skids/wheels start to interact with the ground just dump the collective completely and let it get firmly on the ground ASAP. Being light on your skids is dangerous.

It's up to version 1.2 now. It's not in the Changelog, but he added Trim-Reset like I requested when he banned me from his Discord. LOL! (And also added a fake "Force Trim" function that the real one doesn't have. I'm just happy to have the Trim Reset as it's needed by the way DCS is forced to fudge force trim to make it work on non-FFB sticks. Without it you can get yourself painted into a corner, trim-wise.) I'm appalled (but not surprised) that that bug is still in the sim after all these years. Yeah, just happened to end up near him then found forming on him far easier than I'm used to in the more modern DCS aircraft so thought we'd give it a try. We also didn't know how to change our radio to back seat control (just learned that a few hours ago), so that's why we weren't able to raise him. In the next video I do it with another guy in the back seat and easy radio turned on, but then forget the air refuel switch needs to be recycled after it comes out, and as the DCS tankers don't yet know how to deal with that contingency as none of the other planes have had that issue until now, we end up with the tanker putting the boom through our cockpit. I do have a regular KC-135 in this mission as well. Again, just happened to be near this guy so we thought we'd give it a go and I started recording video as it looked interesting.

In this video I had just pulled up to this tanker because it happened to be there, then we started trying to raise it on the radio but we clearly didn't know enough about how to operate them yet. In the next video I turn on Easy Radio and we (with a different guy flying WSO) are able to contact the tanker, which is the regular KC-135. (I put one of each in this mission.) We still only manage to get a few seconds worth of fuel before it pops out, then we can't get it back in because I forgot that the refuel switch needs to be recycled in this old jet. 9:00 Yes, you're correct with DCS and scaling (flying mig21). Have the same issue. I can see a bloody dot of a bigger plane 40 km away, but when I get closer 4-8 miles It's pretty much none visible or pretty much the same size. Not to mention other, minor targets like helicopters or fighters. Funny to clearly see trees, buildings at the distance but not be able to spot a helicopter flying above of these... Or I see flares being popped by "a ghost".
@admiralqualityspretendingtofly
@admiralqualityspretendingtofly 26 күн бұрын
I'd say they really need to fix that but it seems they keep making it worse instead of better. The new "DOT NEUTRAL" label mode helps a bit, but I feel like it shouldn't be necessary and it's annoying to use as there's no feedback as to which mode you've cycled to with LShift+F10, you can only determine it if you're staring at a dot when you change it.

One thing I should note, I'm currently on a 1280x1024 display, that I've upped to 1920x1536 in the Windows desktop. This way my videos and streams still show as 1080 HD - you guys actually see the image sharper than I do! (I'll get a new HD display soon, saving my pennies.) But that shouldn't affect much, essentially I'm just adding additional anti-aliasing to my image. Just like the old SSAA feature that's now been removed did. (And I'm running 2x MSAA as my DCS anti-aliasing setting. I don't care for the artifacts in any of the new modes, at least the ones that will actually run on my 1080 card, some of the other new ones like DLSS are greyed out for me. But having seen the effect on others' videos, I don't think I'm missing anything.)
@madyogi6164
@madyogi6164 26 күн бұрын
@@admiralqualityspretendingtofly I'm doing Full HD at the moment as well. As for f-word scaling, it drags since like 2.5 series (so quite a time). Same is with plenty of ground objects lately (not scenery). Like they intended to implement some "masking" (fog of war). For me it causes the units to disappear underneath me as well (when overflying at low alt). Possibly falling under ground scenery layers.
@admiralqualityspretendingtofly
@admiralqualityspretendingtofly 26 күн бұрын
@@madyogi6164 Yeah, that sounds like DLSS or one of the other new scaling options. Try MSAA 4x (and if that's too slow, 2x) you should get a much better looking picture, at the cost of a few FPS. Also, in the NVidia Control Panel, look for "Antialiasing - Transparency" and turn that up. It cleans up the edges of transparent textures, like trees and fences are made out of, greatly improving the quality of MSAA, and causes no frame rate hit that I notice at all on my 1080 card. ("Fog of war" is of course just a metaphor for low/unreliable information and situational awareness, not actual fog, but I know what you mean. :)

I also turned off the "head tracker thing" for the Jester menu as it was driving me insane - or adding to my insanity I should say....I have had one weird accident on take off and I do not think I was holding in the NWS button as I am used to the F5E and usually release that just before starting the take off and I do not think I pushed any of the brakes, but I did go straight off to the left of the runway and damaged my gear.
@admiralqualityspretendingtofly
@admiralqualityspretendingtofly 28 күн бұрын
Yep. Interfacing with your face is how dogs would use computers. And the NWS is *so* much better than in the F-5, where it comes on far too strongly. I hope it's accurate to the aircraft, but the built-in "curve" of the nose wheel steering is perfect in the F-4. I'm slowly getting over my fear of using it at higher speeds. Seems to work better than the brakes when major corrections are needed but your airspeed is still too low for the rudder to be authoritative yet.

It's not very hard but the interface is poorly designed and labeled so I can talk you past the gotchas.) And yes, it's so nice to not have to be hitting the silly, unrealistic radio menu to *read* where the enemy is and instead, actually use the aircraft radios as they're meant to work. (They've got it set up in there so we spawn with the channel everyone's on already selected, that helps a lot too. If you expect players to tune or even select the correct channel preset button you'll likely not reach half of them.) 3 more in this series, check 'em out as well if you have time - there's one where the GCI directs me RIGHT onto a bandit's tail by saying "Split S, NOW!" Just amazing work from sgee! I wasn't in a super-serious mindset during any of this, just having fun and getting to know the server. I don't take getting shot down too badly, I know I'm providing some other player with joy. I do always try to live though, for the realisms! :)

@@coyoteduster8919 I certainly felt like I was trying to evade but yes, they did let me off easy. I paid their favor back with my target fixation, LOL! (You won't believe me but I mostly try to get in close like that so there'll be stuff that plays well on video and makes good thumbnails. If I'm not shooting a video and narrating I play a *bit* more seriously, but I still don't care if I get shot down, I'm happy to have made some other player happy.)

Actually the TF-51D Mustang in DCS is actually a P-51D modeled without guns, and the 3rd fuel tank in the fuselage removed. (I always wondered why they called it a tf-51D, for a sim noted for it's realism?) The real TF-51D canopy is flatter to make space for the rear cockpit controls (The reason this model doesn't have rear controls!). The other visible difference is it's taller tail, rather then the short stubby tail as the P-51D! Here's the real thing! kzfaq.info/sun/PL04EF86731F7D9519&si=thFptOGiGFl7ME9y

Yes, some have the bulged bubble but I've also seen them with conventional shaped canopies. And I didn't know about the taller tail but I see them now. Not all TF-51 conversions had them though. aerodynamicmedia.com/tf-51d-d-funn-for-sale/

@admiralqualityspretendingtofly
@admiralqualityspretendingtofly 10 ай бұрын
No it is not, and yes, the new flight model in progress (that's now been advanced to the Stable version!) is awful. You can disable it by editing the first line of \Program Files\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\Mods\aircraft\Uh-1H\FM\FMOptions.lua and changing "true" to "false". (Get Notepad++ to do the lua editing. Regular Windows Notepad can break lua scripts if they use extended characters.)

No, then I'll have *less* visibility because things will be smaller on my screen. (Also there'll be unrealistic barrel-distortion. The classic fisheye effect of a wide angle lens.) The default feels roughly correct for the viewing angle of my display in front of my face. And remember, I'm controlling the TrackIR so I see where I want to see (at least I do when the TrackIR isn't glitching - IL-2 really implements it poorly, DCS does way better with it). Wide angle looks fake, I never go wide though I will zoom in to help see things. To me that's like squinting in real-life.

Nothing major that I could see but this was literally my first hour in it. Stay tuned for more over the next few days! One thing I will say is you're not missing a whole lot if you've already got the Syria map (other than possibly missing out to join a game hosted on the Sinai map -- that's the biggest reason to own all the DCS maps). Unlike Syria, this is low on famous landmarks (with the pyramids being an obvious exception) and high on repetition and it shows, but of course none of that has much impact on playing war. What *does* have an impact though is the fact that this map is literally about one quarter solid city so your frame rates may be impacted as mine are a bit here. (Cairo and Alexandria but Tel Aviv and Gaza are big swathes of city too.) So if you don't get good frame rates it might not make the best place to play. (Or if the setting is actually over the Sinai Peninsula then you'll probably be fine as it's a relatively sparse and barren stretch of desert.) Nothing about it would make me warn anyone off yet. (I'd say that for all DCS maps, even Razbam's Falklands map. Again, I hate to miss out on a multiplayer session for want of a map.)

My thing is, the plane is super responsive and even twitchy with the wings out like that. Bomb Sweep the wings, and it should smooth out a lot for you. yes there will be some alpha, but it'll be smooth.

Tip: first join properly on the tanker. Then, depending on side you joined on, move right or left to end up about 10-15 feet from the basket. Then slowly start a closure on the basket about 3-5 kits of closure( the Tom creates a bow wave so drift slowly right or left towards the basket. Use peripheral vision, because if you stare at the basket you will over control. Keep in mind DCS is nothing like the real thing. However to give perspective, a KC-130 is about the easiest tanker a fighter can tank off. Note DCS is not very close to the actual thing especially if your closure is the speed you are using. rushing your tanking evolution will end up goofing the whole evolution up.

Don’t look at the basket, keep your focus on the pod in front of you and place it on a visual reference to your canopy and keep it there. Only use your peripheral vision to watch the basket. You’ll get there! 👍

I've just started to be able to do this in VR but I'm still struggling to do it in 2D. Something that has helped me is not only setting wing sweep to 55 (this disables some automatic features on the wing that can mess you up), but also trying your hardest to only use trim for changing altitude. Then you're free to just focus on keeping your wing's level with the tanker's wings and working the throttle. Even small pitch changes on the stick can have big effects that cause you to oscillate wildly near the basket. Especially if your joystick has a dead zone or can't handle tiny movements near the center of the axis very well.
@Sweedster

Maybe keep the airbrake on for faster deceleration? It’d also be more forgiving with increasing throttle because the thrust to drag ratio is so much lower.

WOW ED definitely wasn't worried about the slopes and humps on the rails. Coming out of the tunnel the cars were almost airborne. Then at the steel bridge there was a huge change in grade. In fact, I think the cars were completely off the ground at one point. WTG DCS.

Razbam did this map. (Though ED vet their partner developers so I'm fine with blaming ED as well.) Still a work in progress, so they say, so maybe our Digital Trainset Simulator will improve some. Plenty of examples of this kind of thing on railroad tracks in other maps too though. The best flight simulator is the worst ground vehicle simulator.
