 Hey Everybody! This is in all Honesty (Hand on Heart) a TRUE STORY! I have a 2020, same model but with the 3.0L turbo engine. I think it’s a 319 from memory? (Not Important) Anyway, that’s besides the point. I’m in the exact same position as you when it comes to design issues I honestly thought that it would be slightly better considering the amount of money that they cost, especially Downunder. I am disabled Guy in my late 40’s (Due to being run over by a truck when I was Three (lost my right leg, right hip and pelvis is pretty much gone now and my lower spine has left the Chat. Also I’m a semi-functional paraplegic that suffers from a lot of Chronic Pain and other things, but hey. Such is life and Life goes on, right? lol 😂). Anyway, I drive from my Power Wheelchair, so Imagine my surprise, frustration and horror when I had to refuel my shiny brand spanking new “Mercedes Sprinter” for the first time, lol 😂. And after enjoying the first real freedom and excitement It quickly became apparent that I needed to get some fuel. At first I was like, ah no worries. But then it became very evident that the closer I got to the Diesel Pumps, that the electronic sliding side door, which is where the Solid Metal One Piece wheelchair Ramp lowers from, (it’s basically a hydraulic lift that is also electronically controlled lol) that is on the left side of the Van because we are Righthand drive vehicles Downunder. So then I realising that there is no way to lower the ramp safely, I can’t just jump out and walk around 🤣. So I finally put everything back in place, finally find a service station with a single and separate Diesel pump, get myself unloaded finally, only to find out that I now have to open the passenger door, to open the fuel door, so as to get to the fuel cap, 🤣. So there I was, feeling like I had finally got it all sorted out, YAY !!! But NO! I ended up going home without any fuel. Because in my haste to find the right fuel pump, with the correct amount of clearance I needed, in all the excitement I missed the sign that said- OUT OF ORDER.

Can you tie this into the engine coolant for heating as well?
@thebatlwgn
@thebatlwgn 13 күн бұрын
In theory, thats possible. In practice, this particular system is not designed for that. I also think using the engine for heating is a half assed solution. Having the system independent of the engine is a superior solution and has so much less risk to damaging the engine.

It totally lacks any real storage space for your clothing, food or gear, it doesn't have a decent refrigeration/freezer, no entertainment of center any type, You can't really sit back and relax on those uncomfortable bench seats plus there's no dinette table. As for comparing the aluminum outer skin of this to say Earth Roamer vacuum infused carbon fiber camper body. The carbon fiber is both stronger and lighter then the aluminum body of this RV. No real solar or battery capacity and it way overpriced for what little that you're getting.

I am looking at the 144" & 170" sprinters awd and this is my first & going to be my home on wheels for some years to come & I am afraid the 170 will get stuck easier than the 144 going into the desert ( i want to be able to go out for a week /2 at a time & since I am single I was thinking the 144 would be enough space as I will be building a similiar setup to what you have minus all those lights as I do not have the $$ & I want the van compass 6.3 and 35 inch tires conversion with a locking diff & my $ will be gone ... & didn't even get to the inside and the 16 kw 48 volt system I really want. Ok so I am new to van life but I use alot of power so I feel the 48 volt 16kw battery bank is something I will need since I do alot from computers etc & AC . I would want the 170 inch wb but if you were me would you get that or knowing that its just me & my dog or would you get the 144" I am planning on living in remote areas in the desert as well as going to cities from time to time... I just am torn about if the 170' will prevent me from some of the whoop's/ dippin up and down small hills ( I call them) I see some of the 144's make & think it couldnt be any bigger or he woulda not made it (the departure angle is a little less but ogh the extra space * I am 6'4" 265lbs ;/. Since you have the 170 what made you decide on that instead of the 144 ... Thanks and do you know what model Sprinter I should get as far as amenities like lane assist ( as alot of those dont work once you puut 35"tires I hear so I dont want to waste my $ on packages that become unless. I appreciate any & all info you have & thank you alot for this awesome video . I will be one day soon starting my own series . GOD Bless P.S. Liked & subbed

Hey! Thanks for subscribing! It’s super hard for me to tell you if you would get stuck without seeing the exact stuff you’re talking about. I’m personally not scared (solo traveler here as well) because It has a good amount of ground clearance and I plan to be fairly cautious about where I go. I went with the 170 because I know that I need more space to be comfortable. 144’s are tiny inside. And 16kwh is a decent amount of power. I’m going with 800AH which works out to 9.6kwh at 12v. You should strongly consider a second alternator to keep that thing topped off when needed.

Jon, just a heads up for when you start bolting stuff to the interior based on my experience in my 3500 XD with shelving units and a near catastrophic incident last week. The issue is the sheet metal that the interior framing is made of which looks to be around 1mm with paint or 20 gauge steel. My shelving unit tore loose from it last week, in spite of there being 4 5/16-in rivet nuts installed (just to anchor the top of the 8-ft shelving unit) because the sheet metal is so thin it allowed the whole thing to flex enough that it stressed the metal to failure, pulling the riv-nuts out with chunks of truck frame. If you're going to mount anything heavy to that inside frame with any kind of L-brackets, I'd recommend riv-nutting at least 14 or 12 gauge steel mounting plates along the sheet metal and fasten to them rather than directly to the truck itself. That will prevent flex at the riv-nuts. It's amazingly sad how cheaply modern vans are made, even the expensive ones...
@thebatlwgn
@thebatlwgn Ай бұрын
Thanks for the heads up! I’m actually going to be using a kit from Lost Hiway that adds a bunch of structure for attaching stuff so hopefully I won’t have that issue!
@PetrosArgy
@PetrosArgy Ай бұрын
@@thebatlwgnsounds good. The issue here was that the mounting points from Ranger (upfit manufacturer) used two rivnuts grouped together front and rear which was what caused the flex. In older trucks made with thicker sheet steel that wouldn't have been an issue, but this damn thing is ridiculously thin. I like your push bar mod and might stop in to overland on Monday when I'm in town to meet an inspector to see what my options are. Too many damn deer here in PA to drive around without added protection...
