Also he hit the nail on the head: authoritarianism thrives when it is based upon happiness. Just observe how easy it was for Trump to manipulate people to donate millions to pay for his legal fees. Just imagine how easy it was for OAN, Fox News, Alex Jones' Infowars, and other such outlets to spread lies to the general public. Also note how easy it was for leftwing outlet to water down the truth and journalist standards to persuade people to believe their version of events. If you add to this the mind numbing effects of the smartphone, it becomes pretty clear that you can make people docile and submissive.
