Such a nice memorial to your friend. When my daughter was in high school, her best friend’s father was killed the same way. My oldest son is trying to start a tree business. He watched hours of KZfaq videos. He was trained to climb trees in the USFS to collect cones. But he also is the World’s 1st Deaf B.A.S.E. jumper and has been packing tandem parachutes for the last 8 years. He been with many friends who have died BASE jumping. Tree climbing seems just as risky. He climbed a few of mine this winter in helping me thin my forest. As a mom helping, it’s not easy to breathe. Love your channel and watching it is something we can do together and discuss. We live in Pend Oreille County, WA

Awesome video. Especially the end when you climbing down. Logic says climbing down is simply the opposite of going up, but it's always nice to see a demo. No one else demonstrated the going down part.
At 47, I hear what he said about removing your eye correction...i haven't worn contacts for years, but i can't see anything close with glasses anymore, and bifocals didn't fix the problem! I have to lose the glasses to do any precision work.

can someone explain what the **s are suppose to represent when filthy language is used in print? I suppose these guys want us to read the filthy language if by some chance we don't hear it. I recall hearing "family friendly" videos on one of these. What happened? Was enjouable while it lasted. No more tho.

I did a little bit of logging when I was younger in the southern tier and we pretty much did the face-cuts the same as they're showing here. The straight back-cuts though, that we didn't do. We always started higher and angle down towards the back of the face-cuts. That way even if a tree started going the wrong way the angled part of the back-cut wouldn't let it fall that way. We were in the middle of nowhere though and the trees were only 12-18 inches so if one started going the wrong way it wasn't very hard to just push it to the right direction.

Excellent work!!! I just would like to understand and learn something: why do you make the notch cut so large? I tought it should be about 20% of the trunk and in the last cuts you made it about 70%. Why? I am very grateful for this video. Thank you very much

I have a tall pine that is only 5" in diameter. It has a slight lean in the wrong direction. If there is room to use a wedge, that should overcome the slight lean. I know the rule of thumb is to ALWAYS cut the face cut first. For this tree, if I cut the face cut first, then given the width of the bar, there is no room for a wedge. In this case, it seems like I could make my back cut first, then get the bar out of the way, start my wedge, and then make my face cut and then use the wedge to finish pushing past the original lean. Am I on the wrong track with this idea? Is it nuts, or dangerous? I certainly would not do this with a much bigger tree. Looking for some advice. Thanks!

The top of your nail works great for testing for a sharp edge. You know it’s super sharp when you barely touch the nail to the edge and it feels “sticky”. I learnt this when sharpening chisels and planes for woodworking. That’s all a chain blade really is, Many planes lined up in a row. I’m sure posting this on a 4 year old video will get lost.
