It's a siphon which never fails to start, no matter what, and it's a purely mechanical solution. Very rugged and durable, which is exactly what you want for a Mars base. It is a very interesting system, too.

I would be concerned about the mgCl leaking & killing the plants. Propylene glycol may be a better option. For thermal regulation a Ground source loop would likely work much better than totes full of water. All you need is some trenches below the frost line & some black Poly tubing. Another option is to face the green house to face south and insulate the north side to reduce heat loss.
