I cannot believe these teachers that claim they “work for practically nothing”. I have a cousin who taught for 32 years and now retiring at age 56. She has taught in the same school district in Ohio that entire time. She started making $45K per year in 1992 (but $45K per year in 2023 dollars), and is ending making $77K per year. For her pension she will collect 95% of the average of her top three years salary, so that’s north of $73K per year, starting at age 56. Her mother is still alive at 80 years old, so it’s safe to say she’ll live to at least 80. So she’s retiring on $1,750,000, and that is guaranteed. This is not the same as people whose retirement is in a 401K or other private investment funds.

In addition to other important factors, I feel like you (and you school support system) weren’t given sufficient child psychology training and education to help you know that when a child lashes out or talks about how she wants to kill everyone this means that they themselves are victims of severe abuse at home and need loving intervention and counseling. Children never act like this without very good reasons. They have deeply betrayed and hurt Parts that require Protector Parts in them to take over. Sometimes this presents as freeze, fawn or flee, but can also present as Fight response. Someone severely abused these kids, and unfortunately it’s probably their own family. I highly suggest that you study Internal Family Systems by Dr Richard Schwartz.

BIG HUG TO YOU!!! I totally support your decision. You definitely deserve a break. I’m shocked that ASSAULT is taken so lightly. That is dangerously irresponsible. Your principal should have been fired. I’m surprised you didn’t try a different school, like private or Montessori?

Thank you! I totally agree. I was offered a position at a private school and almost took it until I realized how much lower private school teachers get paid. $25k salary for example 😳

Excellent video. After decades of unsatisfactory work in business, I'm going back to school to become a teacher. Although I certainly agree that teachers are underpaid and underappreciated, which is sad and inexcusable, I would rather work with kids that with adults trapped in the rat race. The kids' innocence and exuberance are worth far more than being rich or "successful." You seem like a lovely person. I'm sure your kiddos love you. Thank you very much for being a teacher!! We need teachers like you.

Oh, Jacqueline! Listening to your testimony broke my heart! You are clearly a tremendously introspective and insightful woman with extraordinary talent. You are clearly a loving and compassionate educator. This is my 30th year of teaching. This was my first year I have had behavior issues in my classroom that reached the level you're describing. I absolutely understand the powerlessness you felt and the grief and frustration over teaching in an unsafe environment due to the behavior of specific students. It is scarring for all involved and such an incredible shame violent students are allowed in classrooms. It truly disgusts me. At the same time, I still love teaching. It sounds like you do, too. Don't give up your dreams because of those students. Find a school where you can be a teacher, not a corrections officer. You will shine. Please reach out if you need a mentor or a friend. 😊

I seem kind of on the fence, last minute... im hearing a lot of teachers are leaving in droves. They hate their work because parents and admins are as disrespectful as the troubled kids. But i guess thats a district-to-district issue, right?

A retiring teacher put it this way....."The teacher is afraid of their principal, the principal is afraid of the Supt. the Supt is afraid of the School Board, the School Board is afraid of the parents, the parents are afraid of disciplining their kids......AND THE KIDS AREN'T AFRAID OF ANYBODY!" Gee.....what could POSSIBLY be wrong here??

My great-great grandma was a teacher, my great-grandpa was a teacher, my grandma was a teacher and my grandpa still is, my mom is a teacher and my dad used to be until he became a principal, and I also wanna become a teacher, but the only thing holding me back is salary. I really think teachers should be paid more since they make such a huge difference in the world.

The key to “classroom management” , as you put it, is to locate and single out the alpha boy and punk him out on the first day of class. Discipline must be established immediately. Little boys can smell fear and weakness and will push and flex on pretty young teachers straight out of college like you. I know because I was that alpha boy. Dominance must be established immediately.

Great content! I am so excited to teach Spanish! I completed my bachelor's degree while living in my car; I spent the better part of 5 years traveling around Latin America, and I became fluent in Spanish at 25 years of age. I am currently enrolled in an alternative teaching program to teach Spanish, but as I will be around 8 months to get into the classroom, I've decided to get my CDL. A company will be paying for my training and I will be creating videos during the process and sharing as much as I can for everyone else out there interested in driving! I begin on the 31st. I would like to teach now, but I have not been able to find any districts that will allow me to teach without a license. For reference, I'm in Ohio! Take care.

I work the trades, many of our jobs also have 3+ month long vacations. It rocks. Oil rigs often pay $80-$130k per year and you only work 6 months a year. It’s extremely hard work though. I myself am an electrician going back to school to be a teacher, most electricians are making $54-$72 an hour + amazing benefits and very often I get December and January off + holidays
