hey really helpful vid just wanted to ask how often did you need to hatch brine shrimp and did you bother to feed them at all? Im planning on getting a mandarin this week and gonna do the same as you did.

I didn’t feed the brine shrimp. I don’t recall exactly how long it took to hatch. I have a video on the brine shrimp hatchery. It might be 24-36 hours to hatch. Then they would hatch for 48 ish hours if I remember correctly until I needed to change them out

I don’t use just pure hydrogen peroxide.. I put my fried in a small container with one cup of tank water.. I’ve been slowly add hydrogen peroxide to the water until I see bubbles form on the flag.. You only want the hydrogen peroxide to affect the allergy not your coral. I use a very small, soft bristle brush to wipe away any debris that is on the coral or the frag.. You will see the bubbles forming on the spread and you were able to gently brush it with the bristle brush.. With the hydrogen peroxide added to your tank water in the dish you can let the flag sit for a minute or two with no harm.. It’s the peroxide is so strong that it’s bleaching your frag you know it’s too strong for your corals.. It is easier on the coral to have to go back and repeat this process after a week if you still see Algae

Fauna Marin PHOS 0.04 is my go to these days, it's kinda magic for PO4. Mild carbon dosing for bacterial health and it helps skim out NO3. A squirt of Ocean Plankton delivers Calanus without the nutrients of dry Calanus. I swear I'm not an FM shill, the stuff is just really effective lol. @shallowreefing
@shallowreefing Ай бұрын
Wow. That is kinda shocking. I will admit that fauna Marin is not big in America. I think that’s their biggest problem. I’ve used bacon energy. It’s pretty expensive for the size of idk how it compares to other carbon dosing methods. It seems to have a minor improvement on my tank. But again it’s part of an entire system so it’s hard to tease out how much BE does compared to others.

@@shallowreefing my tank would literally need one drop a day, so 100 ml might last me forever😂.I adore FM products, I have had nothing but success if I just follow the instructions. I got into saltwater in 2006 and have done plenty of mix and match of what I think is going to be the best combination of stuff, as a result of wasted a lot of money as this European style reefing is not only better but less expensive overall. Their foods, Balling Light, bacteria, salt, it’s all extremely high quality. I imagine Tropic Marin is similar, it’s a remarkably better methodology than our North American style 😔

@@PnCBio I just bought a ton of trace and part c for tropic marin along with 35lbs of soda ash haha. I wish I woulda done sodium bicarbonate since that is what fauna Marin recommends. I watched their latest video and it makes sense that there could be too much precipitation with soda ash. I’m doing some things with my tank now in hopes to fine tune it. But I may do a video about their bolus method vs what I am doing. And see what feedback I get.

I get this lowering phosphate approach is fine if u have acros but even adding that phosphateE It’s still a bandaid. Still something else causing your phosphate levels. Either way lanthanum works but does have its drawbacks. What I found that’s helps is 3things : Algae scrubber Decent skimmer More frequent water changes I have a few videos of my 1+ year system on my account. When I checked phosphates the other day, they were pushing .4 (not .04) , please observe my acros as they are all happy and colourful with no STN. I think the whole phosphate thing is highly debatable.

@@jbreefer148 💯 Fauna Marin has played right into peoples struggles with phosphates, nitrates, supplemental bacterias, dinoflagellates, etc etc. I think when u put in dry rock you are destined to get Dino’s , some to a higher extent, others less. The best thing is to get over the 9 month mark, and add coral! The coral eat the nutrients. Also u get different diversity by adding different frags.

it’s very easy to get rid of cyano. no chemicals needed. take a sand/gravel vac, place the other end into your filter sock, roller etc. be careful when using phosphate e-. i suggest you drip it into filter sock or even into the skimmer outlet. that product is quite strong. and you need to use one step each week. don’t throw it all in there. sometimes it may even take more than weeks depending upon your tank volume. 0.17 isn’t bad at all. it’s manageable.
@shallowreefing
@shallowreefing Ай бұрын
Thanks for the tip! I manually siphon out as much cyano as I can during water changes and blow it off the rocks to get into the overflow. I put phosphate e in the overflow so it goes through the filter sucks and skimmer and never in the tank. Before this video my phosphates were at 0.3 which is way too high for me. I wanna be below 0.1 I can already see a difference in my corals now that my phosphate is at a better range.

I am doing an update on this as we speak. My entire view on phosphates have changed. But a safe number to shoot for is 0.1 ppm phosphate. I use the Hannah checker to measure it. I believe in a more wholistic approach now where there isn’t just one product that will reduce it to where you want. But it’s more of a multi pronged approach. Reduce feeding, increase filtration, use phosphate E, find the source of your food that has the most phosphates in it and then find a substitute for it. My upcoming video will be done in about 2 weeks. I hope it helps!
