This is so beautiful... Heading to Berlin in a few days. Did they require a permit for this or you can shoot freely? (Non-commercial that is)

I'm Dutch and I don't give a shit about the 100 km/h limit. It was because of 'nitrogen' and the 'nitrogen-rights' were immediately sold afterwards to build homes.

wait how do the switches work? I don't think i've ever seen a cog railway with switches before!
@impaledloaf
@impaledloaf Ай бұрын
Depends on the cog system used. The most common ones in Europe are Systems Abt and Riggenbach. The Abt system uses a wide cogwheel and one ore more narrow cograils in the middle, which can sort of sandwich the diverging rail at switches. System Riggenbach seen here (or whatever the soviet equivalent is called) uses a ladder-like cograil which is way more rigid. So at switches you have additional sub-points, in order to turn/slide the rail and cograil segments out of the way where they intersect each other.

I do prefer the Dutch trains, as they are cleaner and more efficient, but they are substantially more expensive than they are in Germany. As someone from the States, I find both Germany and the Netherlands to be more like first world countries by comparison to where I grew up. This is largely due to the public transportation. I do wish German cities would do something similar to what Utrecht did and turn a large motorway into a canal, expand pedestrian and bike paths, and discourage driving as much as possible. But Germans are in love with cars. I don't see this ever happening here.

The one near Wetzlar / Asslar is the only intersection that is fully built in this shape in all of Germany. Shame such a big build is just standing around in the middle of nowhere. I use it from time to time. Right now the nearby B49 is in need of modernization and it's in discussion to connect to the autobahn do maybe it will finally find proper use

We moan about our railways in England, but the German ones are nothing great, even if the trains look nice, and I have heard Deutsche Bahn have a bad reputation for cancellations, strikes and delays. Actually Scot Rail in Scotland are probably the best I've used: clean, modern, not too expensive and on time.

Those communist metro carriages are a disgrace to the city. The pro-russian government made a deal with the russian Metrovagonmash company (allegedly by the pressure of russian leadership). This was corruption (russians did the whole "refurbishing" for a high price tag, there were cheaper offers), they under delivered, no ACs were provided. This company made the ugly 416 series "Uzsgyi", these are diesel metro DMUs that are assigned to sidelines all over rural Hungary. I'm a train fan, but I hate these trains.

In London I know it with the height of platforms and size of the tunnels. but does the track to platform distance also differ between deep level and subsurface lines?
@saulschlapik6818
@saulschlapik6818 6 ай бұрын
London's subsurface trains are wider than the deep tube ones, so the distance is also different. The Piccadilly and Metropolitan lines share tracks between Rayner's Lane and Uxbridge so there should be a significant gap for the Piccadilly.

How many tracks are still used in Leipzig Hbf?
@Sibamwifa
@Sibamwifa Ай бұрын
Tracks 6 to 23 are still in use, tracks 1 and 2 are the tunnel tracks. Originally, there were tracks 1 to 26 and in addition a handful outside the main hall (called 10a, 18a etc.). The old tracks 1 to 5 were dismantled when the city tunnel was built and now accommodate one of the entrances to the tunnel station, a parking lot and some other mundane things. Tracks 25 and 26 were where the parking garage is now located and track 24 is the one with the historic engines.

The Molly train is very cool. We used to have something like that in England called the Weymouth Tramway. It run up until the 1990s with class 33 diesels pulling EMUs through the town streets to a ferry terminal. Sadly it stopped running and they pulled the tracks up a few years ago, but there's videos on KZfaq of the railway crews "bumping" parked cars out of the way of the train! Also, with the "rush hour lanes", we now have those in England. We call them "smart motorways", although I don't think they're so smart, because they are more dangerous if a breakdown or accident happens.

Isn't it beautiful how the double decker intercity train is essentially the same railcars pushed by the same locomotive as the regional train you took afterwards, and both stop at every small town station - but one is white with a red stripe on the outside instead of just bright red, so it naturally costs more :D
@Hollandstation
@Hollandstation 7 ай бұрын
Does it cost more? I don't know honestly. What I do know is that this particular IC was included in the 9-euroticket for regional trains and smaller. This is due to the fact there is 1 IC and 1 Regional train per 2 hours, so the IC functions as a regional train.

The Betuwe line is electrified with 25 kV AC 50 Hz, in contrast to most of the NS network which has 1.5 kV DC. In the past the DC electrification went to Emmerich in Germany where the locomotive was changed to one of the German 15 kV 16.7 Hz system. Nowadays passenger trains coming from the DC system change over to 25 kV AC near Zevenaar, from there all trains use the same double track line into Emmerich, with a changeover between 25 and 15 kV near Elten. This setup requires multi-system locomotives and trains that switch between systems while moving. In practice the rolling stock used across this border seems to be: ICE 3 class 406/407/408 (DB/NS), Flirt 3 multi-system (Vias ex Abellio) for local trains, and class 189, Traxx MS and Vectron MS for freight trains. Can you confirm this? The video also shows some diesel locomotives (probably local freight or shunting). (Also the ICE line to Amsterdam still seems to be 140 to 160 km/h, are there any plans of upgrading it? That could speed up inland intercity trains too, using IC NG sets.)
@Hollandstation
@Hollandstation 7 ай бұрын
There are ICE's, Vias trains and freight trains. And the elektrification on that piece of shared track is indeed 25.000 kV so as far as I know you're right. The problem with upgrading tracks from 140 km/h to 160 km/h is that the signalling system is outdated and can't handle 160 km/h safely. I think that that's the main factor holding the maximum speed on 140 km/h. All the IC trains can technically reach speeds of 160 km/h and more in the case of the ICNG.
