Looking for my first condenser stage mic - Im a keys player and its mostly backing. My fav dynamic is the Beyer V70 - and Im considering the SR117 and the KMS105 primarily. DPAa 20-28 and Shures KMS8 are in the mix - but not the primary choice. Thoughts?

@AntonBrowne 3 күн бұрын
Hmm, I think you'll have to try them. All are quite different to the V70 (I don't know the DPA) and the 117 and 105 are quite different to each other. The KSM8 is not a condenser and unless you really like its proximity thing, it's pricey for an ok mic. If you're serious about buying, you may find a shop that will get them in for you to try. Good luck.

@AntonBrowne yeh. Finding to try is an issue. Most places I know of don't carry any. The odd place that Do tend to only carry one. I'm based in Nottingham though can travel if there's somewhere suitable.

@@AntonBrowne Id like to thank you a lot Anton for all your work in your videos - they are absolutely brilliant for comparisons. While you havent directly compared some of my options- you have covered most of them compared to some - and then those with others. While you can never tell until you actually hear yourself though them in your own environment and PA - its as good as it get to narrow down choices )and in the UK ou simply cant fins resellers that stock most - and when they do theres generally only one option to try). In the end Ive gone for a Sennheiser E965.....It seemed close (ish) to the Beyer V70 I use as a dynamic in general character - and while having slightly less top end its a much smoother top end (the point of a condenser in many ways). the switchable polar patterns will help too. i runed out the Senny MD series and Shure's NXN8 and KSM8 as I really wanted condenser. The KSM9 is too "shure" like (I dont like the SM or Beta 58). the Earthworks SR117 seemed to be voiced quite like a dynamic - so why not use a dynamic. The Neuman KS104/105 were really nice up top bu seem a little light in the low end. The DPA and Gelfell are both extremely flat response - probably ideal for stage work, studio and broadcast work but for a live band, would probably need that high end lift on the desk anyway that other have built in (there is after all a reason most have it). The Earthworks SR40V actually seemed to be the prefect choice for me (and you did A/B the V70, e965 and SR40v too which confirmed it in my mind) but at £750-£999 its just too expensive for me to justify really. IF I don't gel with the senny I just might have to suck that extra cost up though - but hopefully that E965 will do the trick in the live mix. Once again - thankyou for the time you take to make these ic reviews and comparisons - absolutely the best resource out there for mic reviews and comparisons.

At the end you ask why anyone would use a 57 on instruments, so it left me wondering, what should be used instead in the same price range as the 57??

Everybody should try the Miktek PM10 (tom mic) on voice. Super similar to the M88 but with a little more life… has an american transformer and on sale now….this is a vocal sleeper!!

Tried the 8/C, cleaner and clearer and possibly sibilant sound. Well behaved plosive rejection but without low end authority! Returned it! Better than thr SM58 but very similar to the e835, beautiful mic, no foam in the grill… a finer mesh inside the outer mesh, not sure all this research is worth the price!!!

@AntonBrowne It's a bit like tuning a guitar by ear. Once you have trained yourself to do it and it becomes natural, you're only reminded of the skill and training required when you go to teach someone else how to do it. The "ear" for microphone quality is one that I had developed some by accident, just playing and listening to live shows mostly, but had never thought about training it further nor had I realized the full importance of the right mic for the job. For these reasons and more, I'm grateful for your work.

What an unbelievably rich voice Aaron has. I have a deep voice and wave forms typically show me at around 80-400hz… and I tried to go down that low on my NT1, and thought I was close until he dropped into a whole level at the bottom of the ocean…. And I was still at periscope depth… AMAZING! Thanks for this.

I need a new mic lol. I have a Beta 57, and a Beyer Dynamic V70. I do like the V70 but it needs replacing and as itsd noise handling isnt the best Im looking at others. Ive considered the MD431 and teh MD445 - along with the KSM8 and this new NXN8. I like a little air on my vocals which is probably why I like the V70 - though its possible a little too much - but I also like the heft the V70 has in the lo end. any thoughts?

It’s weird how some mics sounds clear for one voice and for another voice looks muffled. I like a more brittle and crispy (and even with a tenor voice with good mid highs, I find it hard to find what I want ) I don’t know, I liked the e945 but sometimes it hits my ears so hard. And all the others sounds sweet and smooth, it’s like missing something I can’t find on Eq. And I really hated the v7 on my voice. My most go to it’s b87a, ksm9 (supercardioide)and ksm9hs(hypercardioide) but even being clear enough, it sounds smooth 🤔

I'm coming here 2 years later on the same search: I've got a low voice that goes down to an A1 chest (maybe an F#1 occasionally as I learn) up to an E4. Not much oomph below a B1 though. A year ago when I started exploring I started at a D2. I sing backing vocals and a few leads on a relatively noisy stage. All of a sudden my Sen e935 doesn't work down here very well. Above a D2 it was OK. My voice always sounds kind of 'hollow' and all you hear is the air if I get right on it, it seems; maybe a better mic would help that, too. All the mics mentioned in the video and comments discussion run from $400 to much more, out of my budget for our 3-piece cover band, or at least more than I want to spend. We only play out about 40 times a year, I guess 3 shows worth wouldn't be too bad. But... I was looking at the EV ND96 for around $200, much more in my price range. Very tight pattern. Reviews mention it being a 'fuller' sound, which I think I also need for the middle part of my range. Is there anything else out there that I might want to consider? Or just bite the bullet and look at the one Anton mentioned, or some others in the comment. Thanks for any input anyone can provide. My goodness that video, those two lowest notes!!

Hi Anton, For years, I've travelled on the road of master keyboard, audio interface, laptop and amp. For a clean stereo image (for rotary simulators, pads etc.) I have used a small PA or powered speakers. On the laptop, I'd run a DAW but these days use Gig Performer which is an amazingly stable and reliable host. With such a setup, that has many advantages for me, earth loops were the first issue that arose between the components and seemed to scupper whole concept at the very outset. The simple answer was to get a Ground (or Earth) Loop Inhibitor (or isolator). These typically come in L and R channels and use RCA plugs to the audio output socket/s and then plug into your amp or desk. They can easily be had for around a tenner and totally remove the hum issue. Most of what's inside is just a big capacitor per channel.

When I joined the Pentax forums I discussed Chromatic Aberrations with one chap and he informed me that CA's are there in lenses by design and it creates the 3D effect or dimensionality to an image. Its been 15 years since I heard that and I can concur that this is correct and when ever you see a lens producing CA's its a good or great thing IMO. So like at the cinema when you watch a 3D movie you buy a pair of cardboard glasses with one eye red and the other blue to fool your brain as you combine the images from both eyes you get the impression of dimensionality. Mix red and blue paint, you get purple down a single lens. The movie isn't as sharp but its very interesting all the same. Some of best lens manufacturers like Zeiss and Voightlander can have lenses with psychedelic CA's from wide open, and thats where they shine and the image looks most dimensional, but you need to shoot in monochrome to save the dimensionality in the image. In colour if you edit out the purple it might lose that 3D pop, or shoot without high contrast things in the frame if you can and it pops. But thats the thing, if there's fringing around high contrast objects, why isn't appearing in a low contrast scene? Thats because the CA's or light hitting the film or sensor at a slightly different time is simulating DEPTH or dimensionality. You don't have to believe me......... But the video game makers are also adding lens aberrations into their video games to make a more cinematic experience, like lens flares and lens bloom and adding CA's. There's in game footage in some youtube videos showing "With CA's turned on and with CA's turned off" and when they're on the image is has more ambience and dimensionality, but it loses some sharpness. Without CA's on the video game is sharper. Okay so thats where the problem is and that is about having a sharp image with CA's and dimensionality in a lens. Here is some in game footage with CA's on and off, and you can see there's more ambience and dimensionality with it on. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fM1-faVplbWYpmQ.html Not just used in video games but in CG movies too. I've seen youtube videos where they CG an old scene from Star Wars and add lens aberration including CA's to give the image a more cinematic feel and ambience. In the video below they "Adds a healthy dose of CA's" along with many other lens aberrations to create that cinematic look. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gZmSkraQ1tqml5c.html So the photographic industry talks about CA's like its a dirty word and they review lenses by saying "CA's are well controlled" which means the lens has virtually no 3D pop. I've had those modern lenses for mirrorless with no CA's and no 3D pop, and I was looking at my files on the computer going "why does everything look so bland and boring and sterile and clinical". Sold it all and kept my Pentax gear. I like CA's because I know what they're doing in there. The problem with the modern stuff is that they're trying to get rid of the CA's so they're copying Zeiss's Distagon formula of having floating elements in a prime lens and sort of slicing the image via bokeh and how the out of focus areas are split up. So's that when you look at the image it looks kind of holographic at the depth of field and considerably before and after it. The $30,000 cinema lenses do this. But the modern for mirrorless lenses are doing it a little bit, plus having high edge to edge and corner to corner sharpness that all the lenses are now exactly the same from all the manufacturers. Modern photography wants and demands sterile lenses with no character, because they can add those things in post to a certain degree. They are taking the cinematic look out of the lenses in exchange for clinical sharpness and 2D flat images where objects can blend togther. But when a lens can separate tree branches and give a depth in the tree canopy and another lens simply cannot do it and it all merges, then thats when you have 2D lens.
