You are correct in stating that the suid is for executables but you suggested that you should have used a script file as an example and it only works on binary executables.

Why is it that one cannot change other users passwords by using passwd? passwd runs with root privileges also when invoked by a non-privileged user, right? What exactly prevents this?

I wonder if there is an advantage in using "-P", the perl-like regexes with grep.

8:56 > _"color coded command line is we can actually see [matches]"_ for those wondering, it actually is achieved by doing this (if wanted persistently, then in the bashrc file): alias grep='grep --color'

7:45 We'll use grep until it breaks (and then we'll use egrep). 9:21 Put double quotes to avoid some non-standard character of our regex being interpreted by the shell like actually shouldn't. 34:06 The sed command filters daa for editing.

when you compile a *.ko file and put it in its proper location, do you have to recompile (and reflash - if cross compiling) the kernel for them to work? Or alternatively do they always just work via insmod?

I've recently been rewriting some of the heavier loop jobs in my scripts to use gnu *parallel* instead. It's similar to xargs, but even more powerful (and more complex). One audio conversion script I wrote went from taking several minutes to <30 seconds to process an album's worth of tracks. It took a couple of hours of work to rewrite and test the functions, but it was worth it.

The command "find . -perm +6000" is deprecated, this works instead: "find . -perm /6000". Also, I can't remove setgid with "chmod 0777", it works only with another 0: "chmod 00777"
