I’m 34 and after working as a writing teacher and working in restaurants for so long, I’m now looking into becoming a Registered Dietician. The prospect of having to learn all the hard science feels a bit overwhelming…but I’m so passionate about food, healthy eating, and I love working directly with people :). I hope I can adapt to the pace!

Hi, I am 37 year old mechanical engineer, I have worked in the automotive industry where most mechanical engineers love to work. I always wanted to become an architect 😢 Took a gap for children and raising them, and now I want to study and work in field of architecture, for last 20 years I am regretting for choosing mechanical engineering 😢😢😢 I feel the same, I have wasted 20 years of my life😢😢😢.

I agree with you that neither is more high stakes than the other. A good teacher can have an enormous impact on someones life. I know that for myself, some of my teachers over the years I still remember and they really shaped my way of thinking and understanding the world. That is definitely on part with the impact of medicine on my life.

I'm 27 and currently am a Cybersecurity analyst and considered successful by my peers but I recently came to the realization that I am not happy doing this anymore. My passion for it just died as I felt like I been getting no fulfillment in what I do even though I do make an impact in my field and protect 30+ companies from cyberattacks everyday. I have access to a GI Bill I haven't used which will help me fund this for a bit. My bachelors is in Cybersecurity and I feel insecure looking around as none of my courses relate to bio, chem, or anything medicine related. I thought I may have to get a new bachelors in something applicable. I just found out yesterday about post-bac for pre med and this is where I'm currently at in the process, I plan to apply for this post bac at university of St thomas in houston for next spring, just waiting on applications to open up.

I did my *first* MSc at 29. Physics. Wasn't exactly easy, but as my younger colleagues pointed out, "you came with a vision of what you want, and often sat in the first row". Also, a minor advantage: when some teachers are assistant professors, they are younger than you, and somehow tend to give you less "sh*te". Folks, go for it!

34? Lol ...my cousin changed drastically his career in his early 50s and got his med license at 56! Considering that the average of life expectancy is of 78 in developed countries it would be odd to settle for 1 career only!

Wow I am amazed by the fact that all the things you are telling in your own experience are literally 100% my own feelings and thoughts. I am a biology teacher, doing my work succesfully, etc, but am feeling a desire for more. I am seeing my future as a doctor who will only stop working when I wont be capable anymore of doing it. Again, wow. I am amazed by your words. It feels so familiar. Now I am preparing for the exam of medicine. I hope that, just as you, it will also be written for me that one day (I hope in the near future) I will start with my dreamstudy and dreamcareer. Lots of love and respect.❤

Everything is necessary... Not everyone should be a doctor... And it's not all as pretty and selfless as it seems, I speak from experience because I am a doctor. It's a complicated lifestyle, very demanding, but if it makes you happy and you like the lifestyle go for it. Hope it goes well for you

Hey Douglas, thank you for putting your thoughts out here - I’m currently a 3rd year dentistry student, but always wanted to study medicine; so I‘m kind of in the field, but not really - you‘re helping me to find the strength in order to change my career path, which is really scary for me since I also fear the financial aspects of it…it’s good to hear from someone with the same thoughts, but continues anyways :) I’ve just discovered you and noticed that your last video is from back in 2021 - idk if you plan to make videos again, but it’d be cool so hear how you’ve been doing and get some sort of life update, if you’re willing to share it Thank you for the videos and especially for the one where you explain your decision to go to med school! Truly felt that and can relate so much to this feeling

I just found this video! I'm Polish and got my Master's in English Philology at the age of 27. I was "two years late" already, on top of another 5 years of Master's. All that despite wanting to become a doctor since I was 6. Life happened. Lots of regrets. I'm enrolling in one of the best med schools in Poland as of now. I still get insecure and very regretful of the "lost time" as I feel like it contributed nothing, but I did get to travel some. People admire my courage and perseverance, but I only see negative traits that led me to NOT get into med school, which were laziness and profound procrastination skills. I feel like those 8 years of my life were meaningless and so forgetful I could just erase them from my memory. I am still, clearly, very regretful, but I REALLY need to forgive myself, because it will kill me. I'm finally at a place I wanted to be at for more than 20 years. It feels comforting to know there's someone out there who is in a very similar situation. Thank you for sharing. It helps.

Think it's also important to note that even though UQ's min MCAT requirement is 504; their average is much higher at 510...pretty much on par with some MD schools in the US.
