I forgot to add a pic to the video, but I have a pic of the muddy paw prints of the same bear trying to get into this chicken tractor with the metal roof. It couldn’t, so it moved to the smaller one. I had chickens in both coops at the time. It held up really well. Zero issues. I have 29 birds in it right now 😃

Get rid of the heat lamp and get a plate type heater. The heat lamp can get dust on it from the woodshavings then it explodes and catches your woodchips on fire then burns down your chicken coop/ house or wherever you have the heatlamp. Look into what I'm telling you. I'm in Connecticut and last year we had 2 black snakes try to eat a 2 month old silkie we had outside. My girlfriend heard the chick screaming and we were able to save the chick the snakes however is another story. So hopefully your using hardware cloth instead of chicken wire because your outside with them. Hopefully this helps we have had chickens for 6 years
@ozhomestead1Ай бұрын
Howdy! Yea we use hardware cloth. The heat lamp is way above the shavings and we have been using heat lamps for a long time (2016). The heat plates are awesome too. The brooder is also inside our backyard fence where our security team of three dogs roam. Thanks for the info!

We are in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia & we raise Cornish Cross each year (just for our own meals). I assume your meat birds are the same Cross since you mentioned buying at T.S. We buy ours through McMurray Hatchery and I've been a customer of theirs for more than 30 years. We not only came up with the 'chicken tractor' back in 1990, but our County Extension Agent loved the idea and talked to other County Agents about the arrangements. Good ole Joel Salatin took that idea and claimed it, making it his own. LOL Lots of people mock the Cornish Cross as being 'frankenbirds' that are highly susceptible to sudden-death. Over 30 years, we have only lost a few birds, so the Cornish remain the best meat bird for us, even though they're hybrids. We use a high protein feed but are now supplementing with white rice and cooked beans to reduce cost just a bit. We allow the birds to grow 8 weeks, then butcher. We always skin our birds and usually halve the birds, sometimes splitting the breasts from the leg/thigh section. Our birds typically weigh 7 pounds when butchered so we have a good feed-to-meat conversion. One thing we have tried and sometimes use is a moveable base that we crafted so that the tractor doesn't move, the floor does. We use a linoleum-rubber base and it's about 14 feet long. So we can keep a clean floor daily by moving and rinsing the flooring rather than moving the tractor which can be a pain sometimes. As you know, tractor-chickens get dirty towards the end of their lives. Good luck with your endeavor..raise your prices!!
@ozhomestead12 ай бұрын
The valley is gorgeous! We almost exclusively use Murry McMurry for our layers and meat birds. We did their “freedom ranger/red broilers” last year too! Awesome information you shared! Thanks for posting! We absolutely will raise our prices
@nyxcin12 ай бұрын
People might be willing to spend on pre made broth/stock. I make fantastic broth with just water and chicken. Nothing else. Thanks for the run down on your pricing, though I didn't hear anything about your labor costs, just the purchase price of the birds and feed.

Go to England and order bacon for breakfast. So lean you will not believe it. Their small farms all have truck gardens each year and they enclose the area , fence it for pigs and haul them water. Then they essentially “starve” them and the pigs dig 12-18 “ deep looking for old roots etc. a pig that would weigh 400lbs in the USA will barely weigh 250 but, after 3 months, that garden is deep tilled and fertilized with pig shit
@ozhomestead12 ай бұрын
That’s really interesting. Sounds rough for the animal

Tires are good so far! No punctures or anything falling off the rim (knock on wood). I engage the PTO low, then go up to 540 rpms. I’ll do a better job of not just having music, but some scenes with just tractor noise. Thanks for the comments! I really appreciate it!
