Steve you keep a great beat throughout the song. A great drum kit I might add. Also just a single bass pedal and no 1/16th notes on the bass drum to ruin the song

You don’t want processed drums to being with… you want to tweak your own sound so it isn’t just another electronic drum kit… I engineer so I might be coming from a different angle… but I think it’s better this way.

Hi Steve - great cover. I have a question. I’m considering the efNote for covers but I noticed I can’t hear the hi-hat hardly at all. Do you think that is a limitation of this kit or was it a mixing issue. Looking for some thoughts and advice. Many thanks.

This was recorded a minute ago… or many more (sarcasm). I think the mixing on this particular cover was probably due to a d emphasis on my part of the hi hat and a bigger emphasis on the tom and ride melody that makes this drum part the challenge that it is. All that being said, the few years I attempted to record with the ef note drums, I was not happy with the way they mixed with music. In this particular song I was very unsatisfied with the snare sound and how it fit with this generation of music. For all the criticism of Roland drum sounds, I was much happier with the way their sounds blended in the mixing process, especially in 80s, 90s music

Steve, thank you so much for these videos. I’m fixing to drop over 10 K on one of these kits. I pretty much decided Roland for durability and reliability. Want to ask you this though as far as the sounds in the Roland with the machine gunning do you feel like you can edit that out and get it a little bit better or even a lot better with all the editing capabilities in the module, I’ve got decent experience with EQ effects reverb all those things I’m not scared to get in there and get on it. What would you say though the possibilities of getting the machine gunning better with the editing capabilities in the module? Is that possible? Thank you.

Very nice! Fast triplet fills are so fun. 2:49 quarters on the ride/kick while snare ghosts the shuffle is pretty nifty. What's the kick doing during that Texas shuffle? Just 1 and 3 or is it adding a shuffle as well?

I started playing drums with an acoustic set, I played electronic drums during that time as well but I didn't own my own set until around 2010. (Which I bought not because of noise concerns but because I have always wanted one literally since the 80's). I understand the limitations of lower end electronic drums when compared with an acoustic kit, ( The hi hats don't usually respond with all the nuances that can be achieved with real hi hats, some sounds are very processed while some others are not that great, bla bla bla). I have done several gigs indoors and outdoors with electronic kits and acoustic kits, my experience was that when I used an electronic kit through a large PA, my drums sounded huge and perfectly tuned (Provided I used the correct samples and set the correct levels, which of course I did). People often complimented the drum sound and not a single person cared that I was playing electronic pads, the music sounded great, they had a good time, how my drums looked was the last thing in their minds. I was never able to achieve that sound quality with acoustic kits. Don't get me wrong, they sounded good, but not that good. That was then, now, with the current technology you have digital hi hats, digital ride and digital snare (Roland TD-27 and TD-50) which blur the line from electronic to real and just like all those years ago, I would not hesitate for one second to play a gig with an E-kit. Of course a couple of powered PA speakers would go a long way, one 15 inch (as your monitor and stage drums) and an 18 inch powered sub for the low end. with those two pretty much any venue would be covered, needing more than that you then are playing a really large venue and probably the venue would be providing the sound anyway. As far as removing room ambiance from the the module (I advised Steve about this before) yes, learn how to modify parameters in your drum module and ADAPT to the venue meaning you might not need to completely remove ambiance but you will definitely need to adjust to prevent the real ambiance (ambiance coming from the venue) clash with your module's settings. Two more things that are not mentioned much: When we play with headphones, sometimes (or a lot of times) the headphones combined with the module's ambiance settings will make the drums sound huge, but when you connect those drums to a PA (or in our case a powered speaker), they will sound very different and in some cases will sound bad (ambiance clash discussed above) Hence needing to get familiar with changing ambience and settings (most modern modules have a very easy path to those settings or even dedicated buttons like the Roland TD-27 and TD-50 do). The last thing is when we play along our favorite music, we tend to raise the volume of the cymbals so that we can hear our cymbals vs the original track's cymbals. A lot of people forget to lower their cymbal volume when playing live. This makes for really harsh sound and in general bad sound so DON"T FORGET ABOUT TURNING DOWN YOUR CYMBALS WHEN PLAYING LIVE! Here is my crappy playing along a track from my phone recorded in the drum module using module's sounds with zero processing.: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y55ympmI3rrXiI0.html

Nice to see you on an acoustic! Man, your playing lends itself to an acoustic kit WAAAAY more than an electric kit. Like, I get way more satisfaction and emotion seeing you bang away on real drums and cymbals. Probably more than anyone else I've seen. You need to find a way to sound proof a room in your house man! LOL.

Hi, congratulations on your execution, I wanted to ask for some advice. Because I have a problem that I can't solve. I purchased a TD50X module with the Digital, Roll, Ride and Charleston set. I use brushes very often, for the type of music I play. Unfortunately I wasn't able to set up the snare drum, to have a KIT that would satisfy me. Previously I had a TD30 with its Brush KIT, which worked perfectly. I contacted Roland several times, but I realized that they know less than me. The TD50X has a specific snare that should work with the brushes, in the 958 position of the instruments. I attributed this snare to a KIT, but the performance is really bad. I also looked for some Brush KITS on the internet that I could buy, without finding anything. I am really disappointed with my purchase, which cost me 3,700.00 euros. It is possible that the Rolanda in the TD50X KITS does not have a brush KIT already defined. Can you help me solve the problem. Thank you

Just played my first and probably last gig with my TD17 edrum set. I thought I would try it for one of our shows. (Cover variety band). It was a freaking nightmare. Drums sounded like shit coming out of PA. High hat was a nightmare, cymbals were Awful, Soundman wanted to kill me. Ended up having to throw my acoustic cymbals on , middle of 1st set - embarrassing night to say the least.
