There's something about movies made in the 70s, this is an absolute masterpiece. I first saw this as an air cadet back then in the cinema. That ending is epic. They deffo don't make them like this anymore.

Unlike popular portrayals of history, Eisenhower wasn't placed as the supreme commander beacause OF the USA, he was manipulated into the postion because OF the British, they did NOT want the US to pull out of the conflict. As to Paton, he was totally incompetent and if you wish to do some research you will find this, yes he did graduate from West Point but was also at Kasserine Pass, he was neither a tactical or logistical genius and IF Montgomery had to UNFETTERED assistance for Market Garden, which he DID NOT, the war would have been over by Dec 1944....to put it simply, up until the very last 6 months of WW2 the British had more troops, ships at sea , planes in the sky in actuall combat against the enemy in ALL theartres of the war ( One million soldiers in Burmah alone in 1944) but their resources had been drained and US preponderance started to exceed that of the British in the final 6 months of the way and the US did NOT want to share the victory as they wanted to dictate post war Europe.

It's a simple fact that Patton never fought an enemy on equal footing. He fought the Germans in August of 1918 when they were starving and had nothing left. He fought them in 1943 in North Africa when they were critically short on supplies and Rommel had already left. He fought a mish-mash of understrength German and Italian forces in Sicily. In '44, the Allies had total air supremacy and all the best German units were in the East fighting the Soviets, unless they had been transferred west to recuperate from their losses and just happened to be there when the Allies invaded France.

Good film with great cast, but like most, filled with factual inaccuracies. James Caans' rather large scene was embellished, there was no chase in a Jeep and the Americans were portrayed as good as possible for the USA film market. The British Officer Browning, played by Bogarde, was more molevolent than the Germans, in the film! Attenborough directing, was a socialist/Labour Party member and keen to keep up the 'lions led by donkeys', in his stance against the establishment. The fictitious character Colonel Stout played by Elliott Gould, seems to spend as much time pushing against the British 'military bureaucracy' as he does fighting the Germans.....got to keep the US film-goers happy, to keep the dollars rolling in.

@@TheIrishvolunteer The Americans failed to take Nijmegen bridge and the Son bridge which was blown up as they approached. The Band of Brothers TV series which follows the 101st has an episode focusing on Operation Market Garden that completely omits the failure of the 101st to capture that bridge intact and instead suggests it was all the British's fault.

It was the failures of many below Montgomery in their strategic and operation roles that made it a circus. The plan was solid. It just was poorly executed and coordinated at both strategic and operational levels so the men at the tactical spectrum suffered.

That is a good summary. I agree. Former British Army here. We learned that Monty was lucky at El Alamein so not much should be taken from it. Churchill chucked a 3:1 attacking resource to Monty, fearing the loss of Suez and the Iranian oil fields..Rommel would have defeated Monty if resources was closer Monty was a political sort, a military plodder and not a scrapper like Patton.
