On a test-drive/inspection, can one force the REX engine come on to check it's operation? On the US model. Especially in combination with recommendation to test-drive on an 80% or greater charge, to be able to judge battery health.

Just got a 2016 r-design nav-lux 2.4 D5. Not got all the bells and whistles, but plenty there. Great nic, full Volvo service history, 60k miles. I’ve booked it in for a cambelt service (£1079, ouch). Hoping to look after it and keep for a number of years. Great car 👍

I've owned a 2003 and 2006. Both transmissions replaced under warranty- along with a few electrical issues. Both had under 35k miles with these issues. After that really no issues and sold at 80:85k miles. I don't recommend buying this tho. Too many issues of what could go wrong. I had new car bmw warranty on both.

One thing that may happen on the M73 is the head bolts snapping. You will chase a coolant leak message and will see no leaks anywhere. Then you think you have a crack somewhere until you find a head bolt snapped... Being there and saw it many times. The block on these are damn solid but if you ever have a coolant hose go and the engine runs warmer for a bit, almost certain a head bolt will go.

Generally only people that haven’t owned a RR seem to tell everyone they are bad. I have had 6 RR and currently have the 5.0 supercharged and it’s fine as all others I have had from 3.0 diesel to the 4.4. silly basic problems which most cars get. Proper maintenance no issues. Don’t buy one if you can’t run one is the best advice on any luxury car.

You didn’t emphasize enough the gearbox issues, this is by far the biggest one and it affected the car throughout its development cycle including 2023 model years. It’s a huge issue with the car unfortunately, you need to be aware of the face that you might need to replace the box at some point.

My 2022 ND2 had the issue with the roof rubbing against the roll hoop. It can be a big problem if left unaddressed because the rubbing can wear a hole into your convertible top, which is an expensive fix if you don't catch it within the warranty period, which can easily happen depending on how infrequently you put the top down. It doesn't just affect older models. It only happens if you push your seat all the way back.

2020 club owner here. Be on the lookout for your infotainment screen getting delaminated from the inside. This is due to sudden temperature change inside the cabin which in turn causes the adhesive on the inside of the screen to delaminate. If you have your AC on cold full blast on a hot sunny day and you park your car in direct sunlight which heats the infotainment screen assembly, it will happen. It looks like a bunch of spider webs or frozen ice crystals. I'm taking mine to the dealership in a couple of days to see if the warranty will cover it.

I have the facelift and I love it a lot! What an epic car, 1 billion for a facelift?! 😅 But the rear subframe rust is annoying, it's supposedly under extended warranty for 20 years. But the dealers just won't change it unless it's broken or about to collapse. Mercedes is fully ignoring customers on that issue.

Great summary. I have owned a 2007 r56 s for 15 years and experienced a few of the common problems. Its undeniable that the n14 engine has its issues but there are many factors that contibute to its reputation. BMW's original Long Life oil change intervals got many engines off to a bad start with some suffering up to 20,000km between oil changes under Mini service plans. Add to this the tendacy to burn some oil, the difficulty in reading the standard dip stick, the weak original timing chain tensioner, and the way in which these fun cars are typically driven and you have a recipe for long term disaster.

One major issue with my '12 D3 XC70 is a faulty automatic gearbox. Since around 170k km, when putting it in Drive, it just bangs into gear like no clutch is applied whatsoever. Have had it flushed and have read about gearbox software issues online, but my Volvo workshop says that swapping out for a new gearbox is the only solution. They had one other XC70 with the same gearbox problem. Have been driving out for 3 years like this but it will go wrong one day. Other than that, had the windshield sealed again after 10 years as water was coming in (known issue apparently, but no guarantee by Volvo). Had the front bushings replaced around 180k km as well.

How does a 2010-2012 European one, with around 2.5 or higher behave with a couple of adults, their luggage and driving in mountains with bad weather? I would assume not really too bad, because of the torque (the diesel ones especially i'd guess?)? I would like to know from both 4wd version and none 4wd. Anyone?

My 2005 L322 had rusted rear-wheel arches, broken waterpump, severely compromised alternator, one of the parking sensors not working, and some electrical faults leading to the gauge needles intermittently becoming paralyzed and not moving at all, while the rest of the dash works fine. All in all well within spec for a car nearing 20 years old. Damn good car though. The L322 is something else to drive and to experience, but make sure to take good care of it and treat it well. It's a machine and it's an overbuilt, overdesigned tank that is actually rather easy to work on.

Unless you're a friggin nerd scientist with the engine oil additive test bed instrument's at home then yay can be done, but the way you spewed it is like anyone can spot oil additives in used oil. You buy a kit online and take a small sample of your oil and then send it off to a lab, relatively cheap, simple to do, and commonly done, you’d have an answer within a week

If you’re looking for a convertible, double check the weather seals all around the vehicle. Drop the top halfway and examine the mechanism for dry crusty seals at all the connection points. Dry or cracked seals are a red flag. They required special care and maintenance from the previous owner. Neglected cars have leaking c and a pillars and the replacement seals are difficult to find now. Just be wary, buyer. These vehicles are timeless, but they are still older now.
