Especially with a thick rug pad - shouldn't we cut the pad smaller that the rug size? Allow the rug to overlap the pad a few inches? I'm imagining tripping over the edge.thanks

These instructions are laughable. In what fantasy world are they working? First of all, the dimensions of the rug are rarely the precise dimensions published by the manufacturer. Second, your rug pad is very likely bigger than your rug. Get the rug completely out of the way: you goofed when you put down a rug before a pad. Now unroll the entire pad onto the floor. Forget about "marking" the floor or unrolling it "with the plastic." Both of those are dumb. Once you've got the pad unrolled, throw the rug back onto, it and shift everything around, rotating from corner to corner until you've got a 1-inch margin between the rug and pad. With scissors, trim the edges that go beyond that. Now shift everything--the rug and pad held together in your hands--to wherever you want them positioned on the floor.
