Do I have the wrong bike for hills? I’m in Los Angeles so it’s a big mix of hills and slopes, and my specialized allez has a 12-25 cassette with a 53/4x crank. It’s mighty fast, but challenging on uphills

Fantastic stuff! Love this. I got into a study where they will be doing a full VO2 max, FTP study and sweat study and compare the results before and after a bike fit. I have never done this other than the Zwift FTP tests and super curious. Especially since I am doing Ride Across Wisconsin and curious about how to better do my nutrition during longer rides.

Like some other commenters I get a vo2max score from Garmin. I imagine whoop and wahoo and others give similar. Presumably this is a guesstimate based off my FTP and other power data. I wonder how meaningful it is? I don't care a jot if its "accurate" (ie whether the number would match a professional test) more whether the trends it shows are meaningful - if it goes up/down can I conclude that my real vo2max has probably done the same

Fantastic. This promises to be such a good series. Such a balanced approach, especially acknowledging the importance of strength training as we age. An often forgotten or avoided aspect with many cyclists.

I’ve bought a set of Garmin power meter pedals recently - after set a ride it’s now giving me VO2 max numbers - how accurate are they ( I’m 56 and it came in with 46? )

love this episode. a good mix of science, Dan's personal journey and most importantly, Dan's inspiring me to be more active. I don't love the plug for sponsored product (even though I'm a whoop user), IMO, they just muddy the content's integrity...and I may be in the minority here, I'd rather pay $ for content that's clean without sponsored products/mentions

This is good work, Dan.I thought I might share my recovery experience to help you and others. My journey back to health was sparked by similar experience though I was already 60 at the time. I was a skydiving instructor until I had the unfortunate experience of a midair collision in freefall that ended that portion of my career. After 6 months of recovery, I decided to go back to back to cycling as my injury was neck (C4) related. and this was because obviously there would be less jolting than in running to agrevate the repair. That was in 2016. I am now 68 and am both pleased and relieved to say that I have improved my health considerably to the point where I can compete in Grand Masters local cycling events with satisfying results. I wish you all the best on your journey it will be your best reward.

Mate, that what life is all about: it's more important to make it count and enjoy it. Of course it takes hard work, but who wouldn't want to enjoy retirement without being a burden to your loved ones due to ilness or sad life. Smile more, worry less, work out more, complain less. 😁😁😁

Hi Dan, not sure if you'll see this comment, but if you do, can you let us know how the Garmin estimated VO2MAX compares to your tested one? I noticed you've been wearing the Forerunner as I do, and hence wonder how accurate Garmin's value is.

Is it true that your V02 Max can also be a predictor of a heart attack? I understand that a V02 Max under 20 means that heart attack goes substantially higher at this threshold. Can your trainers comment on this?

I wish they would bring emotes back. So toxic when I would wipe a duo and either pull the mistletoe out and make smooching noises or pull the grill out and "cook um". BO was where I started...I loved it! Also, no loadouts, yes please. Way more traditional BR style. 🍒🧡

Dan, this is by the far the best and most important series of videos ever to appear on GCN. Motivating those of us who have fallen off the health wagon to get back on it again is vital. But even sharing all the expert advice about why certain things are important no matter what your health is equally important. Thanks for doing this, and I will be looking forward to your future videos.

Mate, I have really been hooked by this series of yours on improving health/VO2 max etc. I have been cycling all of my life but hit a wall when the kids were young and work was tough. For the past 15yrs (after meeting my new partner) I have embraced triathlon and running as well as the cycling. My VO2 max sessions since you started your series have been 2x 10k races - both very hilly!! I'm looking forward to analysing the data to see how I'm getting on. 🙂
@timtaylor9590

an increased vo2 max from exercise or weight loss isnt an accurate measurement for life span, if you look at all the studies they only measures those who, in most part, naturally have a higher vo2 max not those who exercise for it. in order to determine life span by increasing vo2 with exercise or even drugs is impossible because you cant bring a person back to life and tell them to increase vo2 to see if they live longer. gotta love science right, its usually flawed theories as the greatest minds showed throughout time.

I think its great Dan is getting back to fitness. You guys are still pretty young and able to make power and recover. It would be great to see something on cyclists 50-75+ and maintaining fitness as well as building fitness and making gains for people that were not elite back in the day. Many take up road cycling at an older age (myself) for fitness, racing and helping fitness in other sports. Forest Velo here on KZfaq has a good channel for the basics and is a great example of an older extremely fit rider. Love the show keep up the great work!

Good luck with the effort. One of the problems of an aging athlete is muscle & memory (as opposed to "muscle memory"). You remember what you could do and you get damaged trying to emulate it.🤣 At 76 I can attest to it. Maintenance work is a big part of your journey.

@gcn Can you number these videos in the title? Also, for every episode can you list by number all past episodes? These seem to be super useful, but helping us easily find each episode, in order, is at least as important. I found a playlist on you channel. The numbering would still help.

You don't have to use body mass at all in the calculation. The absolute number (ml/minute) is much more useful. (You can check body mass and composition as a separate health metric)
