Mk24 Homing Torpedoes are Destroyer killers. They're acoustic so are attracted to the loudest propeller noise so destroyers, which are twin-screwed, are a natural target. Just make sure to stop your own engines when you fire as they have been known to double back and sink the sender. Also remember that they carry a much smaller payload, so they're not really suitable for large merchantmen anyway. Carry one or more in the rear torpedo compartment for use in emergencies when you're trapped by a hunter-killer group - you'll be running silent anyway and there'll be plenty of noise above you. Remember, they'll also be attracted to any decoy you release and any sinking ships you've already hit, so you have to choose your moment.

The real Conte Verdi was scuttled by her Italian crew in Shanghai Harbour to prevent it from being seized by the Japanese when Italy changed sides in 1943. She was then raised in July 1944 - only to be sunk again by American bombers the following month!!! She was then raised and repaired once more, renamed Kotobuki Maru, converted into a troopship, and towed to Maizuru, north of Kyoto in June 1945, before being beached by damage from a bomber raid on 25 July 1945. As you said, her sister ship, Conte Rosso, fared even worse. She was torpedoed and sunk off Sicily while transporting Italian troops to Tripoli in May 1941, killing 1297 people.

Although it may sound strange referring to an inanimate object as ‘she’, this tradition may relate to the idea of a female figure such as a mother or goddess guiding and protecting a ship and crew. The majority of carved figureheads over the centuries were female - baring one or both breasts. Sailors' superstitions viewed women on board ship as unlucky, but a semi-naked sculpted female form was believed to calm storms at sea. Similarly, a ship can be likened to a womb - offering protection to those being carried. Another idea is that, in many languages, objects are referred to using feminine or masculine nouns. This is less common in English which tends to use gender-neutral nouns, however referring to ships as ‘she’ may refer to far more ancient traditions. Interestingly though, in French, the larger the vessel, the more likely it is to be described with a masculine pronoun. *Une* goélette (schooner) - *Un* porte-avions (aircraft carrier). So, as Dr Ruth said, "I guess size really *does* matter!" Captain Ernst Lindemann of the German battleship Bismarck referred to his ship as ‘he’, in view of its awesome power. Or (my favourite theory) it could be because they are similar to women. They're expensive, need a lot of paint - and always have a lot of men hanging around them!

Gunboats are designed for patrolling rivers and are notoriously shallow-drafted - so much so that they are not particularly sea-worthy. "Rolls on wet grass", is the phrase sailors use, I believe.

The Bataan Peninsula was the last hold-out of US forces in the Philippines. The battle lasted 3 months before the inevitable US surrender. Of the 75000 American and Filipino soldiers captured, 10000 later died on the 65 mile Bataan Death March to Camp O'Donnell. After the war, the Japanese commander, General Masaharu Homma and two of his officers, Major General Yoshitaka Kawane and Colonel Kurataro Hirano, were tried by United States military commissions for war crimes and sentenced to death on charges of failing to prevent their subordinates from committing atrocities. Homma was executed in 1946, while Kawane and Hirano were executed in 1949.

Yes folks. Hitler was actually the one who declared war on the US; not the other way around. It is debatable whether Roosevelt would have gotten enough backing to expand the war into Europe until Hitler made the decision academic. Without Hitler's somewhat rash decision, America's involvement in the war would probably have been confined to the Pacific.

Of the two intact battleships on Battleship Row, USS Colorado was not in port at the time of the Pearl Harbour attack while USS Tennessee was only lightly damaged because it was landward of the USS West Virginia which took the brunt of the damage and sunk (but later re-floated)
