As a guy who has been exclusively a criminal defense lawyer for 34 years, I see many parts of this scene that would never happen in real life. But, the scene is so good that it doesn’t bother me at all. Same with my colleagues: prosecutors and defense lawyers as well.

3:37- "Lt. Kendrick ordered the code red didn't he, because that's what you told Lt. Kendrick to do! And when it went bad, you cut these guys loose!! You had Markinson sign the phony transfer order!! you doctored the logbook,!! you coerced the doctor!- now I'm asking you, Col Jessup!! Did you order the Code Red?" Lt. Kaffee, (Tom Cruise)...... I can see why the judge informed him he don't have to answer, because if he admitted to any of Kaffee accusations (1. Ordering Kendrick to do the Code Red 2. Having Markinson sign the transfer order 3. Doctoring the logbook, 4. Coercing the Doctor- so when he finally admitted to doing one of these which was the one, he needed to get him on- the judge in good conscious could not hold Kaffee in contempt of accusing an officer- because the officer despite the judge's advice, decided to answer- "Pride comes before a fall."

While "You can't handle the truth" will always be the big line, What Nicholson says right after is some real truth, even ugly. "You want me on that wall, you need me on that wall".... "Code, Honor, Duty".... this *is* what we ask of those who serve and yes, at times we don't want to know how they defend that wall. But, we need to know, because it is not just that we are defended, that we do so without losing our humanity. This was the message of this movie. "I hate them because they beat up a weaker kid". " love them because they stand on that wall". Which matters first defines who we are.

A few questions I always had. Why did the Judge hold Counsel in contempt, and why did the Judge tell Jessep that he didn't have to answer the question? I guess my confusion comes from not understanding which answers the Judge expects him to to answer, which ones he doesn't, and why?

I always wondered if it was written to use the phrase "I think I am entitled" because of the connection to Jessup's view that Caffey is an "entitled brat." Was it written to bait him or did Cruise ad lib it?
