Just beautiful Alan. Have you ever tried a sphere from a square block. The block doesn't really have to be exactly square. Hold it corner to corner. Spin it. Drag your bowl gauge a few times to the left. Drag it a few times to the right. Then you will see a ghost of a sphere. Go after that. Then continue the few changing angles like what needs be done on making it round. I saw this idea from Ronald Kane. I think this is almost flawless. Your video was very enjoyable. Thank you for sharing

I saw your original sphere video and mentioned it in my woodturning club meeting. I got roped into doing a presentation on it, which went pretty well. My teaching is not on a par with you though. This one looks interesting enough for me to try too. No more demos for me though. Turning is easy, demos are hard. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and continue to stay safe, as will I.🙂🙂

I nearly always get surface resin after heating the impregnated wood. This seems to be regardless of how dry the wood is, though I hope your theory is right as then, I can improve my drying process for a better outcome. I had always thought it was the resin expanding with the heat, forcing it to the surface. Some trials required, I think. A dust mask or strong extractor are a good idea when turning stabilised wood.
@AsWoodTurns

The local Woodcraft store has wood by the pound sale from time to time. I scored a nice block of Sapele 3" x 9" x 12". I will be turning a similar item from the 3x9 and a few pens from the off cuts.

Nice use of the offcuts. And a very nice result. Just curious about your hollowing methods. Some ( Richard Raffin and others ) drill a depth hole first. I could be wrong but I don't recall you ever doing that. Is there a reason or is it just the way you learned to do it? Not looking to quibble. You do nice work and get good results. Just looking for other opinions about how to do things.

Nicely done Alan. Another good method to deal with small pieces of wood. Curious what is the minimum thickness one should use to turn plates? Take care Cheers Harold
@AsWoodTurns
@AsWoodTurns 19 күн бұрын
Ahhh. the thickness question. It depends on utility vs art, skill level, relative weight of the wood. When you look at it before picking it up, are you surprised at how light or how heavy? Alan

Hi Allen. I'm on the hunt for new lathe. The one I have now is a 14 X 43 King Canada. Is there a brand that you recommend?
@AsWoodTurns
@AsWoodTurns Ай бұрын
I do not recommend brands. My criteria includes: 1x8 tpi or 1.25 x 8 tpi, #2 morse taper, variable speed. After that, it depends on capacity and budget. Check with your local woodturning club. You'll find plenty of opinions threre. Alan

A little late to the party. Thats a good looking bowl. I live in SouthTexas and mesquite is as available as a loaf of bread is. I mill a lot of it into lumber.Mesquite is one of the most stable woods i have come across. The younger mesquite is a lighter pinkish red, the older the tree thedarker it gets. Old seasoned mesquite can be a very dark reddish brown. It's one that you can literally cut and machine/turn without fear of warping and checking like most species. Dont find mequite hard to turn at all though there is always exceptions. Its always going to have a stress crack no matter the size, you just have to work around it. Its often riddled with holes caused from ants and beetles which often enhances the beauty and perfect for epoxy work.
