No music videos and no comedy sketches! That's what Captain Kangaroo was like back in the '50s-1981: The Treasure House, Animals, the Captain reading "The Night Before Christmas every holiday season, guest star visits, the Toothbrush Family, Crystal Tipps and Alisdair, Slim Goodbody, etc.!

His drinking problem came to a head when he crashed into a school bus in Glendale. All were lost including the bus driver but it was the 1950s so no problem.

I was a big fan of Mr Moose and his ping pong balls and the Grandfather Clock. I can remember when Captain read about the man who sold hats. And I totally forgot about the Town Clown....

Variety shows were all the rage back then.

TBH, this probably was the origin of them. Sonny & Cher started 2 years after this, also on CBS. I bet CBS was trying to reproduce the chemistry of this special by having another couple carry a variety show.
@deependz3231
@deependz3231 7 ай бұрын
@@jedijones No doubt, they were looking to carry the concept forward using a couple "more hip" to attract a younger viewing audience. The Baby Boomer generation translated into big bucks. Soon afterwards, Nixon was persuaded to normalize relations with Red China by big business to sell American products to a new market represented by a billion people, and we all know how well that turned out.
