Roy Hargrove had a haunting sound. I was simply awed the first time I heard his sound. Anyone who picks up a trumpet will discover Hargrove; he was a talent that we may never see the likes of again? He is my most admired trumpet player.

I miss him too. Always made it a point to see him live whenever he played in NYC. He was also an important mentor to me and countless other younger musicians at the jam sessions. He turned me onto the music of Fats Navarro who also became a hero.

Met Roy after a set of his behind the Vanguard. He was walking alone. We spoke a bit about music. I thanked him for the joy he brought to me. A very sincere gentle soul.. What a loss. Imo- for me was the few left in jazz i made sure i got to see when in town. Him and Tom Harrell. Never heard a bad show- always all in. Ty Roy- an uncommonly good soul. With. peace.

I was together with someone about 20 years ago who had claimed she brief affair with Roy Hargrove. She was a Jazz Swiss singer. He apparently would constantly be either practicing, composing or performing.

I'm sad and angry he went soo soon. He was so trully great and gifted and blessed... Illnesss, OK, but how he will/did explain drug abuse in name of god, to the god himself when he faced him is beyond me...

Thank you Roy for being that inspiration while I sat on that chair for 12 hours a week listening to your music little to I know you where in the same boat, I had the honour to see you at the Cape Town Jazz Festival, cutting short my dialysis that Saturday, afternoon and you made it worth it, I was on that chair for 10 years and had my transplant in 2011.When you passed in 2018 I was shocked and the news that you were in Renal failure, not knowing my kidneys suddenly rejected in 2019, I am back on that machine since 2020 but guess what I don't fear it cos I have you brother to listen and inspire me give me hope and make that 4 hours pass so quick like you did for 10 years ago last time, so keep blowing that sweet sound brother Roy we all still need your inspiration, calmness, happiness and love.RIP my Brother

I also play the organ however I was brought up listening to church music in Scotland - Man you should hear the organs there! Drone drone, bum note, drone drone bum note etc. and everyone is sooooo serious and po-faced. Gospel music (and the resulting musicianship) is one thing the US can do better than any other county!

Its spirit. Gospel music is the soul converted to sound. and it's the artist expressing their love for God/TMH. idk your spritual stance, but your talents and gifts change with God in your life. It's just the truth, an easy truth anyone can discover. thats why NO genre will ever compare to American (especially black) gospel.

I never met Roy, but I feel extreme sadness seeing this. In my mind he was the greatest player of his generation. He picked up the torch from Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Donald Byrd Et Al. and carried held high.
