It's awesome how he provokes them all right off the bat so that they all stand up, which he needs in order to be able to make them kneel.

I can't imagine what story Villeneuve is trying to tell by diverting from the novel and having Chani go against Paul. In the book she's like this no. 1 ally.

Yeah in the book she was ride or die...but not because he was the messiah...but because he was her man. argumentative, combative, difficult, distrustful and unsupportive = strong female character.

The fact that Chani is always out of step with her people and Paul, until finally completely separate from them by not standing at the end is a nice bit of visual story telling.

It's a shame that the film doesn't clearly explain how he is able to tell this fedaikin about his mother's life. We understand better where Paul is when we know that these are the memories of the Reverend Mother who was among the Fremen at that time. This explains the mental pressure he is under and, perhaps, his poor choices.

Paul not only convinces the fremen with this, he also convinces the audience that he is Lisan al-Gaib, after this, I literally wanted to stand up in the cinema and scream LISAN AL-GAIB.

Dune contains bona fide wisdom about many things. I think Herbert often finds a way to communicate this wisdom directly through the writings of Irulan who is, after all, the quasi-author of Dune in many ways both metaphorical and literal. Paul is not the Lisan al-Gaib merely because of the constructed nature of the Missionara Protectiva; there is an even more radical way in which he is not the Lisan al-Gaib. He has been changed by Arrakis's environment, by the Fremen, by the Fedaykin and their blood oaths, by Shai-Hulud and spice and ultimately the Water of Life. He cannot be the The Voice from the Outer World because he is no longer from an outer world. Contemporary critics and commentators will often make the (sometimes unavoidable) mistake of viewing Dune through too contemporaneous a lens and the easy associations that were structural, aesthetic, and poetic inspirations for Herbert. In other words, they focus too intently on the easy interpretation of Paul as manipulative outsider. Villeneuve takes care not to give Paul the other easy characterization as triumphant avenger and hero as the Lynch film more or less did. The truth is of course somewhere in the middle given that Paul is not straightforwardly an outsider. Motivated by true love for Chani and the Fremen (who are his people more than the deceased legions of the Atreides ever were), he thinks that if he can become the Kwisatz Haderach he can finally avoid embodying the visions of Muad'dib he has had up to this point. But by reacquiring his prescient sight he realizes that even though he becomes the fulcrum (echoing his sietch name "Usul", the base of the pillar), there are not a limitless number of possible futures and each entails horrible sacrifice. Essentially, Paul (and to a lesser extent, Jessica) unintentionally accomplishes the almost (by principle) impossible: truly becoming Fremen though not having been born on Arrakis. As I mentioned before, I think Irulan communicates this far better than myself: "A beginning is the time for taking the most delicate care that the balances are correct. This every sister of the Bene Gesserit knows. To begin your study of the life of Muad’Dib, then, take care that you first place him in his time: born in the 57th year of the Padishah Emperor, Shaddam IV. And take the most special care that you locate Muad’Dib in his place: the planet Arrakis. Do not be deceived by the fact that he was born on Caladan and lived his first fifteen years there. Arrakis, the planet known as Dune, is forever his place."- from “Manual of Muad’Dib” by the Princess Irulan

Stilgar is the equivalent of Morpheus in The Matrix, the faithful mentor who believe someday the Messiah will return and bring end to their struggles and they are MORE THAN HAPPY to give their lives for it. Javier Barden totally sold that role. I call this scene: "Paul's ascention to Messiah speech"
