I don't really understand what you just explained because I am brand new to Medicare, haven't even picked a Plan yet. BUT, what I do know is that the government has to stop stroking the drug makers by letting them price drugs at such high prices that patients can't even use the medication that they need because of the price, even generics! This can be proven by going out of the country and taking a look at the drug prices in other countries pharmacy prices. In Mexico, Thailand and many others, for example, an asthma inhaler, made by the same company as in the US, are $5 -$7 per inhaler. In the US? $85.00 per inhaler. Drug makers are ripping people off, making billions and billions of dollars from the United States people who need these meds. So what are the other countries doing that the US is NOT doing that they can offer inhalers for $5-$7??? Our government and the drug makers and the insurance companies are all holding hands, all getting incredibly rich, and there is no oversight because the government is in the same line making tons of money. Why else would they not put some pricing regulations on the drug makers? Or the insurance companies? Instead they give them tax payers dollars to make up for a price reduction that wouldn't hurt their bottom line one bit, but hey, the government says "no worries, we will subsidize the reduction and pay you the difference. People will think they are getting a deal". No, it's not a deal because the subsidized money comes from tax payers. The end result is higher taxes for all working people. It makes me absolutely furious. They ought to kick the lobbyists that are padding government senators, and congressmen, (and whoever else is in line) pockets out of the White House! Theft in plain sight imo I have an adult son who has blood cancer at barely 40 years old and he takes ONE PILL a day, and that pill is $400.00. One pill. $400.00. Make it make sense? Sorry just venting. Seems there is no way to fight the Big Pharma as everyone who could do something is in bed with them!

Better solution is to subsidize the patient assistant programs for all brand and specialty drugs and loosen the income requirements on them. The $2000 IRA cap penalizes those who do not take any Rx & those who only take generics.
@GiardiniMedicare

If they subsidize patient assistance programs, then I would imagine drug manufacturers would have even less incentive to keep prices down and instead would increase prices to make those programs necessary in the first place.

Will any of these changes apply to retiree insurance coverage supplied by companies? Ours includes prescription coverage that is part D equivalent. If we switch to a different part D plan, we lose all of the supplemental coverage, not just the drug coverage. So far, none of the changes to part D apply to us, and this plan also has a limit on lifetime coverage.

@GiardiniMedicare

Unfortunately, we don't have a good answer for that. The copays can change according to the regulations that were written, but we don't know if people with current Plan N policies would see their copays change since the whole point of a Medigap plan is that the policy details stay the same over time. We have asked people in charge of large Medigap insurance companies this question and have never received a definitive answer.

The cost varies by state. In Washington, everyone pays the same rate for a given plan from a given company. They flexibility to change plans and/or company at anytime effective the first of the next month. This works for any plan except plan A. Further once you have a supplemental plan. There is no health screening required and you have guaranteed issue ... Again this does apply if you have plan A. .

Sounds like there needs to be transparency in the part D negotiations with drug companies. All one has to do is look at the savings at Cost Plus Drugs (Mark Cuban) to see that there are HUGE markups by the pharmacy supply chains. And we pay through the nose because of this.
@miessy9633
@miessy9633 11 күн бұрын
Since each insurer individually negotiates the price they pay, how would this be tracked? The government isn’t doing the negotiating, so I’m not sure how they can enforce transparency. I’m sure there are a lot of hands in the pot.
@texaszag8748
@texaszag8748 10 күн бұрын
@@miessy9633 “Transparent” doesn’t necessarily mean it needs to be tracked side-by-side with other insurers. But think of the nature of competition. If I’m a large insurer and I negotiate fair prices for drugs and curb expenses for the middle-men, when I walk into a meeting with a large corporation to try to sell them on using us as their health care benefit provider, showing them how I can save them huge sums (transparency), for both the corporation and to its employees, would be a strong selling point. This would inspire other insurance companies to follow, or risk losing market share. Losing market share is not good for insurance companies, because they make their money by spreading risk over larger pools of insured. That’s just my initial thought. I’m sure that if any insurer decided to put something like this into action there would be a whole lot more thought behind it.

Let’s see, last year my basic part D plan doubled in cost, I do not take any medications. My husband’s part D increased by $45. All of our other Medicare and supplemental insurance premiums increased as well. I’m sick and tired of being fleeced by our federal government. I’m stuck paying for increases while you can come across the borders illegally and get every thing for free plus money in your pocket. It’s time for an overhaul in the way American seniors are pushed to the back of the line in favor of noncitizens. I didn’t work for 46 years forced into the government taking a portion of every paycheck and a promise that yeah it would be there when I retired. What they didn’t tell you was they would take it from you again by increasing premiums every year.

You should do an annual comparison during AEP on the Part D and make a switch if necessary. Also, medicare supplement plans are standardized across all insurance companies by the letter of the plan. Supplemental insurance premiums are determined by the private insurance companies and approved by the states. The Federal govt doesn’t have much to do with the amount of premium charged. The biggest problem is the increasing cost of healthcare. Increases in the price of drugs also affect part D premiums which are calculated by private insurance companies, not by the federal government. The government could help bring down premiums by negotiating Medicare drug prices across the board. Most countries do negotiate drug prices on behalf of their citizens. The US does not. I sure hope someday we decided to reel in these greedy companies and do the right thing for our citizens.
