Great job and thanks for including your grandsons in the restoration process. My grandsons have no interest in engines. I worked on tugboats for 40 years, and almost every generator or tow winch engine was a 71 series Detroit Diesel. Tough, rugged, reliable engines, and simple to maintain. I was given a tour of an old sailing ship in New York City that had been converted to a sand show. It had an anchor windlass added to it at some point, and the windlass was powered by a 1-71 Detroit Diesel, which I didn't even know existed. Also, I worked at a foundry in the mid-1970s where the blocks and heads for the 6-71s and 8V-71s were cast. I always looked at the DDs on the tugboats and wondered with pride if I was working at the foundry when these engines were being cast.

NEVER USE EITHER ON A DIESEL! Stick a torch, propane, butane, or acetylene in the air cleaner for 10 seconds then bump the starter and its running with no engine damage.

@@RichardGoodman I like the 1st Gen the most , I sold my 66 a year ago. My dad gave me my 69 108 in June '91 for my high school graduation present. He is the original owner. I've had a few 3rd Gen g10s 88 was the newest Although I love the front end as well as the back end of a 64-66 more than a 67-70 the taillights are what I like the most as they are the same as a 60-66 chevy c10 . I just wish they made 108 versions of the 1st Gen vans then they would be perfect

Hi Richard n Sweetheart. I think I am commenting on #4 but can’t get back to it. Can you provide a link to the fuel pump you used and how is it working ? Also I noticed your temp sender is in the Ther, Housing. Mine WAS in the head right beside exh outlet which is a hotspot. I got a new ther dome cover with sensor thread in it and the reading is lower, I like it better. Henry

Hi Henry, The fuel pump was purchased on E-Bay and was less then $20.00 So far it is working well. One of our vans has the fuel pump on a switch that can be turned on and off when wanted while the other runs whenever the ign. is on. As long as the temp. gage in below the thermostat you should be ok. Thank You for watching!
