My absolute favourite operatic performance of Carmen. The exquisite Teresa Berganza! I believe that this is the version used by the Master Spanish dancer Antonio Gades in his stunning interpretation of Carmen of 1983. Just imagine incredible Spanish dance, the crack and stamp of the shoes, interwoven with the opera in the 'modern' (1983) setting of a dance school and the main character played by Antonio himself with the wonderful Laura Del Sol as Carmen. Their story 'mirrors' Carmen but with one of the finest male Spanish dancers (Flamenco/Ballet) ever known. It is available on DVD but look for the original '83 version. Antonio Gades went on to form his own company at 'Teatro Real' Madrid 'Compania Antonio Gades' and their performances are matchless, whereas in the movie you are drawn into the lives of the characters as dancers at the school of dance rehearsing Carmen with Antonio searching for his perfect Carmen. The music of the opera, interwoven with Spanish guitar etc. and Flamenco is magical!

Her coloratura and precision of the score are exemplary with great musicality and homogeneous voice throughout her range, without varying tempo and in disciplined harmony with the orchestra (she is a great pianist too: every opera singer should play another instrument well)
