If the wind was light from 9 o'clock and gusting, hitting the left of the target and not adjusting makes sense as the wind gusts would put you in the white. The gotcha is if the wind dies. Stage 3 was ugly for me, the wind was constantly shifting from left to right, or would completely stop. When it stopped the mirage was causing everyone to shoot high. Thanks for the videos, surprised they let allowed it
there as many formulas as there are shooters as we will see. Some are simple some complex but basically a wax, bee or canning, and lard, covers all powders. For black powder if you can't eat it, don't shoot it.

@@bunkstagner298 haha! Pretty good rule of thumb! I like this recipe because the ingredients are cheap and easy to come by. It’s reasonably effective as well. There are better lubes for long range black powder that’s for sure. This one does a good job though especially for beginners and people who are just dipping a toe in the waters to see how things work.

@@cedar_tree2006 this rifle has a satin type finish on the wood, similar to many Shiloh’s. I think what you’re seeing is just a trick of the light. There are no such defects on Johnny’s rifle, and he still has this one and shoots it.

Would this work as a patch lube also if I was to soak my patches in it?
@RecoilTherapyChannel21 күн бұрын
Seems like it would, but I don't have any experience with muzzle loaders. I would think that you'd have to watch how much you got on each patch as this recipe is solid at regular temps, you wouldn't want an over-soaked patch.

Fine collection of Ruger single action revolvers ! I too am a fan of the Ruger single actions ! My first was in 1964 and I carried it for 50 years ! I added the Old Army to my collection and being that I had casted bullets all my life it was easy casting round lead balls , very accurate and always black powder either FFF or FFFF! I use the Kieth style 170 grain bullet in my .357 ! In my .44’s it’s always been the Keith 255 grain ! In 2018 I tried the 310 grain hard cast WNFP with great success on the target ( when I’m in Bear country that’s what I carry in it ) The 255 grain Keith is an excellent bullet too for Bear loaded with 20.2 grains of 2400 !

There is a science to everything. Especially shooting with wind. Are the targets heat treated material? They sure have a bell tone to them when hit. 600 shooters is a LOT of people. Were lucky to have five or ten when we shoot.
@RecoilTherapyChannel21 күн бұрын
The targets are mild steel. That’s the reason no jacketed ammo is allowed on the range for the Q or any other time of the year. They do get replaced on a regular basis.

Very interesting video. I have known for a long time that using smokeless lube with the holy black was bad mojo but I have often wondered whether one could use BP lube for smokeless. BTW, what is the purpose of the lanolin?
@RecoilTherapyChannel24 күн бұрын
The Lannin gives it a little bit of extra stickiness to help the lube stay in the grooves.

I selected the GC mold so that I could have one bullet for everything from 800 fps 44 specials to 1700 fps 445 supermag loads. If I were only shooting specials or standard magnums I’d have no problem using a plain base mold.

Jon you keep correcting to the edge of the steel not to center. And you need to leave that action open coming off the line bud.

It was always my understanding that laying the barrel directly on sticks or bag changes the harmony and ergonomics of the barrel.
@RecoilTherapyChannel27 күн бұрын
It does. That’s why we find the Noll point of the barrel. The no point is a spot in the barrel where it affects the accuracy the least. The rifle is too heavy to try and support it without a rest. If you lay it on the forearm, you’re still laying it on the barrel and thus still affecting accuracy.
@jimbauer682227 күн бұрын
Shouldnt rest gun on barrel
@RecoilTherapyChannel27 күн бұрын
In this style of shooting we rest the rifle on the “null point” of the barrel. Basically it’s the spot that affects accuracy the least. The rifle’s weigh 11-15 pounds. There’s no way a shooter would be able to self-support that kind of weight on an 800 yard target, or even a 300 yard one for that matter. You need some sort of rest.
@kwsharps26 күн бұрын
Should gain more knowledge you're mistaken when it comes to this on these old single shots. You have obviously never done this kind of shooting.
@kwsharps27 күн бұрын
If off the left just a bit you should always correct to the center not to the edge. 4 moa right after that first shot would of been the correct wind call.

Not sure what you mean. It's been largely the same all 4 years I've gone. If you mean it's grown over the years, well, it sure has. The first Q only had 35 shooters. As far as "commercialized"...all the vendors there are family owned businesses and normally the owners are on hand performing customer service chores. The big name reloading and ammo companies are not represented at all. Not sure what more a guy could want....

Well, we knew this would be controversial… However, in the modern age, competitive shooters, (who actually have a chance of winning these matches) are working up their loads with the aid of LabRadar chronographs and automatic powder dispensers that can measure down to the 1/100th of a grain and these are all tools that the old timers never had available to them. The notch of these sticks doesn’t really offer any advantage over traditional cross sticks other than ease of adjustment. For many shooters however, the Quigley is a chance to dress up like an old timer and shoot. Everyone gets a different experience at the Q.

Love your videos and I am thrilled to see the Quigley still thriving. My two cents on the new sticks. I think they are too complicated. The game was supposed to be kept simple. This should mean the sticks too. I shoot my local match using a couple broom handles cut for heigth and a leather cradle on top. Take nothing I say to heart as this is my opinion ONLY. Again hope everyone had a good time and a safe match this year. Hope you bring us some more videos of the match.

I’ve got a couple more videos of the Quigley that I’m going to put up. What I wanna do though is start concentrating on the other matches that take place around the country. Everyone knows about the Quigley and so they got 575 shooters again this year. There’s other really good matches around the country that don’t get that many mostly because nobody’s heard of them.

Enjoy your videos and content. I am one of those who would benefit from being introduced to other less well known matches. Thumbs up on that idea. With all the load testing you do, I would love a video on your thoughts about relative importance of the various loading steps with regard to accuracy. In other words, which steps give the most return on time/effort investment. It would really help newer shooters get going without getting stuck in the weeds.
