I always try hiding @ home from humanity, but any negative thing that shows up when I'm scrolling gets an instant thumbs down. I choose to see the best of humanity, in spite of the algorithm trying to show me negativity, and now it is trained to show me spiritually uplifting shorts and humorous animal videos. Your view of the world is your choice. I'm not blind to the frightening ugliness of the world, but I refuse to dwell on it. 🩷🩷🩷

Thanks so much for using my write in about Caliban and the Witch! I hope some people check it out. And yes, Caliban is a reference to The Tempest by Shakespeare. Love this podcast and hearing you all talk about the books you love!

I get why people might not want rings, or to get married. I have anxiety and abandonment issues, so having my engagement ring gives me a physical thing to look at and hold to remind me I have someone who knows all my faults and still loves me and has no plans of going anywhere. It also is one I showed them that I liked an it wasn't expensive at all, so bonus!

A few years ago I lost my wedding ring after wearing it for 9 years. I was out rock climbing in the mountains alone and only realized it was gone when I got to top and wanted to put it back on (dangerous to wear when climbing). When I realized it was gone it felt like a lightening bolt hit me! In a moment I can only describe as surreal I became very present. It was late in the day and I just looked around and on the left side of the mountain it was very windy, dark, and cold and on the other side it was wind-still, warm, and sunny. I sat on the top ridge which was quite narrow with what seemed like a profund choice. The ring was lost forever this I knew. I wanted so badly to cry… I felt cold and dark…But simultaneously I realized nothing at all changed… the warmth of love was just as bold and bright as ever. It was a profound dual state and I sat there with tears smiling. Which emotional side do I want to be on? I made peace with the death of the ring and realized that for me it symbolized a fragility in life that I all too often take for granted. On one side I was heartbroken and on the other, relieved to be free of the anxiety I so often felt about loosing the symbol. I don’t wear a ring anymore… but I still can feel it. The ring lives inside me now and I reminds me often to be thankful that today I get to spend time with the being that the ring represents… don’t take that for granted because it can disappear without a whisper.

If they had been about possessing the other person only women would have been wearing them. I’m glad you found the meaning in them though.

Really appreciated the thoughtful convo on the subtleties of childhood traumas and the fragility of children, specifically what she said about her aunt sleeping in the same bed freaking her out & what you said about getting lost in between clothes, definitely one of the more maddening parts of trying to understand yourself, like maybe there is no one to blame, or no big thing to blame, we’re just soft and sensitive and can’t help but be wounded

The cruelty of comedy is very real, or I guess the cruelty of “fun”, Kelly Oliver’s “Women as Weapons of War” goes into Western conceptions of “fun” in our age of real and simulated over saturation of sex & violence specifically at the tail end of the Bush Admin, she’s uses the media spectacle of female US troops torturing men sexually in Abu Ghraib “for fun” as a jumping off point for some really interesting analysis, highly recommend it touches on a few topics u guys also talked about

It feels like almost every childhood hero i grew up with has been exposed, canceled, had an inexplicable death, or a wild fall from grace just in the past year or so.
