The way the majority of barrel racers whip and starfish their horses makes me sick to my stomach. As a barrel racer myself, I threw all of my spurs and whips away when I was 9 years old, stopped starfishing and stop whipping because it doesn't do shit, I learned how to properly ride and gain proper balance without having rubber bands tying my feet to the stirrups. I was young and didn't even know that horses felt more pain than humans. I am now 16 and want other barrel racers to know that you do not need to beat your horses to win. Horses are like vehicles, they both have speed limits. Once they reach their speed limit, they can't go any faster, so when you kick and beat your horse, it isn't doing anything but causing pain. I don't even have to kick my horse to get him to gallop in our runs, all I do is make a kissing sound 3x and he goes and no matter what time we get I am proud of him and pet him before and after. That's what barrel racers should do. They shouldn't be beating and abusing their horses just for prize money. And all of you other barrel racers saying 'it's normal' and that 'they don't feel it', 'horse skin is thicker than human skin', no, starfishing and whipping your horse is NOT normal, they most DEFINITELY feel it, and they DON'T have thicker skin than humans, in fact, they have more nerves than us which means they feel 4x more pain than we do. So don't be going around saying that abusing horses is normal. Because it's not and you're absolutely terrible for it. If you have to rely on whips, spurs, harsh bits, etc. just to win money then you shouldn't own horses period.

Ive never seen so many shit riders in my life and I'm 65 now. 🤬😠 I Barrel Raced for 10 years with my lil quarter horse mare and never once wore spurs or kicked the shit out of her or carried a whip or layed the reins across her neck whipping her. We spent lots of hours training at the walk and trot and she loved the sport, so much so she was always calm at the beginning and when we finished the race all I would do is sit back and drop the reins on her neck and she stopped and walked off without having to be pulled up hard and always got lots of pats. She also used to stand quietly at the start of Pole Bending and Flagging, the moment they said go she was gone. If a barrel fell I just let her finish the race at a slow pace. No use punishing her to finish fast when we had no chance of winning., " LADY " WAS MY BEST FRIEND AND WE JUST HAD GOOD HEARTED FUN. The only good rider was the lil girl on the pony second from the end, she actually patted her pony on the neck when she pulled him up.

I STRONGLY AGREE with these comments about the whipping and hard spurring. There are much better ways to communicate with your horse rather than beating and kicking it. These young ladies need to spend more time developing trust and friendship with their horses. Helping them to learn and understand what you want from them without abusing them.

Just pure fucking horse abuse this is sickening stop whipping these God damn horses it's not going to make them run faster your just hurting your horse and BTW when you knock a barrel and continue to whip your horse at the end its bc your mad at it for not winning and that is just sick something needs to change with this sport

I think whipping, aggressive spurring and pounding the horse’s sides should not be allowed and cause for disqualification. There is no need for it when you take the time to TRAIN your horse. These animals should not be caused pain simply for the rider’s gratification. It’s no wonder they start going crazy as soon as they cross into the entrance lane. They know what’s coming.

I totally agree. None of those women praised their horse at the end of the run with stroking their mane or patting their neck. The barrel racers that are kudos to me are the ones that pat their neck with their palm of their hand on the run home, then stroke their mane when it’s over.

I’m a barrel racer myself but this whole video is full of people who don’t know how ride. Yes, from the looks of it they seem like great riders but taking a closer look there are multiple things wrong with everyone in this video. Most of them would use their hands way too much, in my opinion it’s better to use your seat and feet rather than yanking on your horse’s face. There was a ton of unnecessary whipping and spurring/kicking. Beating your horse or kicking it isn’t going to make the horse go any faster. Foolish.

I love this sport and have so much respect for horse and rider, but these women need to pull up and not whip and spur after they knock a barrel. It’s pointless and they’re making their horses hate running barrels. The majority of these runs are grunge af to watch.

A lot of these young women need to learn to ride more with their seat and legs, and less with their hands. The amount of riders up in their horses face like that makes me upset. If you have to be that in your horses face for a response, you need to go back to basics. That’s basic horsemanship. What’s worse is the balancing of the rider on the reins. However, the 3rd barrel does have a slick spot on the backside; and the ground in this arena is garbage lol.

Wow, unbelievable. Ive only ever seen pea sized hail, lived in Seabrook or near you there in Alvin my whole life. I've only been in hail maybe half a dozen times ever, like I said all pea sized it seemed, once or twice in Seabrook, once right there in Alvin maybe 5 years ago, and twice in sugarland. I find it fascinating, also tornadoes are something ive always wanted to see in person, but ive only been close to water-spouts, while wade-fishing the Seabrook flats, in summer, waterspouts prefer calm flat waters in the bay like super early in the morning, those are perfect conditions. If you see tall isolated storm cells early in the morning as the sun rises, out over the bay, you will most likely see a spout. June and July they are common if you go out and wade often enough its eventually gonna happen, once saw 3 at one time. They do that sometimes, twin vortices are pretty common over water. Ive seen amazing straight line wind damage when a huge line of storms blows in, and the aftermath of a tornado outbreak where you live in Alvin, remember 2015 Halloween day? But still have yet to see a land funnel. This region actually peaks for tornado season in October, November, and December, as those strong cold fronts start to blow in with wind sheer and the jet stream blowing strong in the upper atmosphere. We do live in southern tornado ally.
