For your key triggering issue, try blowing out the keys with a can of compressed air. Sounds like 'Key Chatter' which effects mechanical comptuer keyboards (which this is using the same type of key switch)

Hmm I'm guessing there must be recorders in the market like that, but I don't think they would be much cheaper than the Model 12, which provides a more streamlined experience being a mixer + recorder in one.

Hey man! Love your channel :) Just had a listen to a couple of your acid delicacies and I'm really enjoying them! Have you put together a release on Bandcamp maybe? Regarding the mixer, I'm trying to drive and saturate everything on the instrument side, so the preamps on my Model 12 are not a big factor in recording... plus I add a lot of saturation during mixing :D Hope it works for your too!

I feel the same. Went to DAWs in the 2000s, it was lagging and frustrating, so i went back to my 16 track hardrive recorder. In 2020, i upgraded to a 32 bit PC and gave DAWs another try. Still problems. Always glitches, latency, clicks&pop. Kept playing with buffer sizes etc to maximize effiency, but always ended up frustrated. I record real instruments, guitars, bass, acoustic drum set etc., and it was always a hassle and i went back to my 16 track recorder. My 16 track hardrive recorder was old, from the early/mid 2000s and there was no USB connection. So i could not share or send seperate files and i had to use the left&right output to export, or use the onboard CD burner. Also , i had to scroll the screen menu all the time to adjust an eq setting on a channel. The model 12 was appealing to me with its conventional mixer lay-out. I'll admit that the Model 12 is still not as easy as it looks. The solo ,afl, pfl , and monitor/headphone setting can get frustrating sometimes when you can't hear a sound because of a missed press button etc. Felt like i was stupid for awhile watching tutorials and still not getting sounds. I later found my Model 12 is problematic and it was not me. Sometimes i get no signal. I power off and on again, and boom the channels opened up. I always need to power it on, power it off, then power it on again to get it to work, but it don't seem to get worst. I'm aware of the sensative power switch that fails on many people, so i bought a very short extension cord with a built-in switch to avoid using the model 12's switch. Thanks for your great videos.

Thanks for your excellent videos. I've watched this one and the one on your dawless setup several times. Having the Model 12, which I'm slowly learning to use, set up in the angle you have it immediately inspired me to do the same on my studiio desk, and happily I got it to fit. I've been plugging in gear during the last few days, with a few more coming. I don't have the gear yet attached with MIDI cables; not done that before, but just got a MIDI thru box (also per your suggestion) and it's waiting for inputs. I agree that the tiny screen is probably gonna be less useful. I have low vision, and it's just really hard to see without looking up close with magnification....not good, ergonomically. That said, looking forward to digging in more. Appreciate the knowledge shared!

@@nedogled Thanks much! My journey is just getting started. I do have one question: a friend of mine shared with me a video of a device called a multi clock. I guess that some people have problems trying to record straight to a DAW due to sync issues among different instruments. I take it that you have little trouble with sync issues when recording to the Model 12's card before moving the stems to a DAW? I have not tried it out yet and I just got a cheap MIDI thru box a few days ago. What say you?
@nedogled
@nedogled 25 күн бұрын
Hmm never actually heard of a multiclock. I guess if you were recording to a DAW, you would send the MIDI to the audio interface, but it's been a long time since I've gone down that road. But yeah, no issues recording multitracks to the Model 12 and transferring them later to the DAW. It's always possible to make micro adjustments to the BPM in the DAW, but I've never had to do that. Haven't really had to think about sync since I got the MIDI thru box several years ago :) As long as there's a master instrument that's sending the clock to other insturments, everyone will be on the same page.
@velanche
@velanche 25 күн бұрын
@@nedogled All of that is good to know! I have a newer audio interface, the RME UCX II, that has MIDI IN/OUT and a "word clock,' but it's so new that it'll take me a bit to wrap my head around it. Of course, the Model 12 also has the same. I am learning to use the Digitaltakt, and thinking that it might be the master for my MIDI gear to stay in time while the data records to the Model 12. I think as far as raw data recording, maybe doing the Model 12, transferring the stems to a DAW, and making sure they line up, might be the most efflicent for now. One other question: you mentioned that you used the Harrison 32 as a DAW. Do you have a video on that, or otherwise, curious as to what you find useful over the other usual suspects. Thanks again!
@nedogled
@nedogled 24 күн бұрын
The mixing part in Harrison Mixbus can be very chaotic and/or boring to an outside observer, but it's definitely a video I'd like to make! Just need to figure out a good way to present it in a useful way, so I'll be doing that for the music I'm currently making :)

IF you are a one man show where you're the musician and the recording engineer, I strongly suggest the Zoom SD recorders for only one reason; metering. Only the Zoom has big large level meters for each track right next to the faders. While you are practicing for your recording session it will be easy to see if your louder passages of the song are peaking or just too high. I have been using a Zoom R24 for the last 14 years as my hardware recorder. My next purchase will be the Zoom Live Trak 20 to increase my LIVE recording sessions from 8 tracks to 20. Also I use an analog mixer, 32 channel subbed down to 8 channels to input to my available 8 inputs of my Zoom recorder, using this mixer pre-recorder gives me the opportunity to add effects so I don't have to depend on the less than pro effects of the recorder. You're not going to get good effects in a mixer/recorder for the price they are charging. No hardware recorder on the market has send and returns for effects. You always want the opportunity to add the highest quality effects and nothing will age your recorder faster than using built in effects.
@nedogled
@nedogled 27 күн бұрын
That's a good point, I think the Livetraks are great for recording live sessions (hence the name) while Tascam's Model series are more for the studio.

I play music, I am a musician, I have practiced for decades on my instruments to become highly skilled. I do not play a computer, my music is real, human and humane. I don't use computers to make music, edit music, or "fix" music, make everything timed, correct pitches or timing errors. I don't use computers at all. I don't even multi-track anymore, the compete song is performed live and in one take, recorded wet and no post processing is done. I begin my song and push record on a hardware recorder and when I am done performing I push stop. The song recording is finished. BUT..... :) This year I will begin to use a computer, I will be adding a MAC with Logic to master my stereo recording so I don't have to push levels so high during the recording process.

Thank you for this! I want to do similar set up like yours. Using DAW at the moment only but want to add hardware instruments. It would be great if you could do a video on how you actually record from start to finish... Take us through your recording process... For example when you record keyboard part is it going through mixer into DAW? And I don't really understand how the midi clock works... You have a lot of cables too! 🙏 Cheers brother!
@nedogled
@nedogled 27 күн бұрын
Thanks! I'm making new music now, but the process is so... chaotic, that it's difficult to document coherently. I'll definitiely give it a try in an upcoming video :) In the meantime, you can get an idea by watching my live jams kzfaq.info/sun/PL2uJ7rGY6VogLFagiTSAbXqYkcEisKj9V I don't record anything to the DAW, everything is recorded to the Tascam Model 12. Most of my keyboard parts are sequenced, but I do play a few of the key melodies live. The MIDI box has 1 input and several outputs. So I send the Digitone's MIDI OUT into the box, and then MIDI cables go from the box to each of the instruments. Of course, the MIDI channels need to be setup up on each instrument to match the channel that the Digitone is sending, but once done I don't really think about it anymore. And yeah, if you plan to go down this road... it might be wise to buy a spool of cables and solder your connectors depending on the length you'll need, instead of how I did it 😅

Hey, so I've done a whole video on how I use the Model 12 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nr9gl7yCuJrYo40.html The workaround I use for sends is that I send some of the channels to the sub mix, which goes into my sampler (Roland SP-404 Mk2) so I can quickly record/sample anything I want, add effects and bring it back into the mixer. Just picked one up last week and I'm finding that it has all the right features for my creative workflow. MIDI sync is a key feature for me. I can sync all my gear in a MIDI loop, record myself jamming, go back and redo a track if needed, such as refining a performance on the TR-6S and then use the VAMP feature to find short loops that are worthy of keeping in a final mix. I'm just learning about the VAMP feature, but I would really like if I could jump between the vamp sections as opposed to letting the track continue until the next vamp (because the vamps are the "good" parts of the jam"). At first I had an problem with the board not having an actual FX loop, but now I'm seeing that using a channel for FX return allows you to record the effect return as a separate stereo track which is actually pretty useful. A typical FX return might not have the routing ability to record on the fly without ultimately sending it to a stereo channel. Also, I tend to think I need more tracks than I really do. 8 tracks for instruments and 2 for effects is actually enough for most songs I work on.

Great tutorial brother! Love your setup. Music seems to sound better going through circuits sometimes instead of strictly in the box. There’s an organic sound that tends to be pleasing to the ears. Have you considered any of the Akai MPC X, MPC Live, or MPC One as a drum machine? It’s also a capable sequencer with time shift, humanize, and other functions to slightly make the drums play behind, before, or right on the beat. It has a DAW type recorder along with sample and stem import and export. I use the MPC One and it controls and syncs with my hardware synths. It will definitely save you space!
