Started collecting a year ago, found that I really like Casio, I wear an A168 a lot. Plan on getting a few more Casio Edifices and then some Oceanus’s. My grail is a Santos, so A168’s for daily, and Santos for some weekends and special occasions.

I have been hunting recently. Bucherer has some nice options, as does Longines. I would love a Sedna gold Aqua Terra, but the pricing is stupid. I know used Day-Dates are the standard first gold watch, but I do not want one. This Cartier or the Calibre de Cartier work for me. I have a 19-20cm wrist. I could care less about weight, save for the cost of course. What else is out there? I almost bought a Grand Seiko, but the size scared me, and it was an online deal. I see deals on Hublot and Bucherer, but I am having a difficult time simply finding such watches. I am fine with repolished watches. My ideal would be an Aqua Terra or Tresor, but a Hublot or Chopard could work. I just cannot find deals on watches I want. A Piaget Polo would be great too, and I have seen them, sold. It is like I am always a step behind.

all (watchmakers) know, not to mess with JLC a 200 years brand, and other companies know it.. so I take my hat off to this brand.. and don't forget that JLC saved Patek from bankruptcy. If you don't believe me, Google it, there is a great book 150 pages that talks about this. You can read how the best watch companies of that era were lining up for LE-COULTRE to solve all their difficulties and manufacture the machines they needed to solve their complications.

This watch is gorgeous, with an understated elegance that radiates quality and good taste. Refreshing to see in a watch market that seems to be flooded with vulgar, tasteless and frankly, ugly watches. I’d be proud to wear this on my wrist.

I have this watch with gray dial. The rubber strap looks so damn good. As easy as it is to put the metal bracelet back on it, I am not sure if I will ever want to switch it back.

I totally agree that 33mm RO is good size for 6.5" and smaller wrist. I wonder how hard is it to change the battery for the quartz movement watches? Do we need to send to AP service center for new battery?

Does the clasp have on the fly adjustment? I’m seeing mixed results when I look it up. It seems impossible given the size of the clasp, but I thought I would ask.

Taught a lot...had a look at a Caree, two-tone, on eBay for 1950€, and the case was almost gone, so much polishing, and the screws were kind of 'hanging out' of a very rounded bezel! So, great teaching!

My parents bought me a Santos Octagon stainless steel & gold for my 21st birthday..................in 1985, and it is still on my wrist every day, I even go to bed with it on. I have had it serviced every 5 years or so. Last year it had a major service, added a link, replaced the face which had gotton a bit discoloured, and had a new side knob as the stone was chipped. Still have all the paperwork and box. I love it and I am sure it will see me out.

The Cartier Santos is an iconic beautiful but I would not buy one. Why? Because the Santos is extremely scratch prone, especially on the high polished bezel. Cartier knows about this flaw and refuses to fix it, meanwhile, KZfaqrs keep making excuses for the flawed and subpar metal casing. Silver colored watches, such as stainless steel and titanium, are the defacto metal of choice. Why, in 2024, aren't manufacturers making "scratch-proof" watches? There are PVD coatings and nomenclatures like 316L steel, super titanium, TinSkin 3.0, and platinum encasements. A company as profitable and well funded as Cartier has no excuse for making watches that are scratch prone. Invest a little R&D and fix this problem. It's not just a Cartier problem, but most luxury watchmakers don't put in the effort to ensure their watches are "scratch-proof" or as scratch resistant as possible. It's a shame. For this reason alone I would never buy a Cartier Santos. Profits above all. So what are the most scratch resistant metals? Tegiment steel and UltraHex titanium.
