An excellent description of a common issue. Number plate mounting tape is ideal for the task, again use double thickness as it will compress over time.

If you remove the retaining spring you should be able to slide the armrest out of the bracket

Reassembly is just the reverse of removal, slide the handle mechanism into place, fit the two screws and job done.

Hi. What year is your smart. My one is 2008 convertible with leather seats and apparently the armrest would not fit. Do you know your armrest part number? Cheers.

Hello Piotr, mine is also a 2008 convertible and the part number I used is A4519701601 but that is for a LHD model. At the time I did this I wasn't aware that there was a version for RHD models so don't know what the part number for that is but you might be able to find out from a Mercedes dealer. Good luck.

widewalt Thanks I spoke with Mercedes already and they said that part no. A4519701701 with is RHD equivalent of your one will not fit 2008 model. I personally hope that they don’t know what they talking about because I really like to have the armrest in my smart. I guess I will have to try myself. Regards Peter.

Haven't had any problems with the internal handle so can't help with that but check out www.evolution.co.uk as there's a wealth of information on that site.

Great for everyone else but yours truly would end up with a hole in the passenger seat upholstery. I shall have to learn to live with my mistakes. Thanks for the right info Smart Sport :)

Recently made a bit of an alarming discovery if you use the LHD armrest in a RHD car. When you lower the passenger seat to extend the load area you suddenly discover the hand brake lever is virtually impossible to operate single handed! I think the next time I do that I will wind the armrest up to its highest angle and hope that helps but being a clever sod I didn't think of that until several days later. DOH! again.

thanks for the video, got my armrest today and installed in 30min. I thought and read somewhere in a forum that there is more to it and need to remove som upholstery clips but it was very easy, no need to drill holes in the seat if you have left hand drive, just push the upholstery with one hand, insert the armrest holder, tighten 3 screw, cross cut foam and upholstery and you done. good invested 98EUR as I was missing the armrest and did not know what to do with my right arm :)

Had the same problem as you so took the opportunity to film my less than perfect attempts. Glad you liked it but keep an eye out for that last clip, I think it is supposed to hold the plastic cover on to the casting but as I had already locked the armrest into the bracket I couldn't bothered to remove it again and it's fine since the day I installed it. Stephen Olin no I never did find out what to do with that bit but nothing has broken or fallen off yet so either I've been lucky or it's just there to confuse simple sods like me. Hope the video helped and enjoy your armrest 😄

Well, the PDF shows that clip to be inserted at the top of the bolted on flange after the plastic cover is installed, followed by the spring; then inserting the arm rest. I too installed without this clip! And, have had no issues. Thanks. Steve
