some of the best linemen i climbed with were short .....

As a retired lineman I can honestly say that climbing that way looks like a pain in the ass. Never climbed a pole belted in in all my years. I retired in 1997 and the old timers would have kicked me off of their truck if I tried to climb belted in. There's so much crap on the poles that it would take you all day just to get to the top.

My question here is, and I'm sure I'm going to find out soon after I apply for a school, but is there a specific reason why a lineman must physically climb a pole or no? What I've been doing for the past 2 years now is traffic control for a company. I create the workzones like flagging and lane closures for when lineman crews or other types of crews need to be in the road to work. Whenever I'm working with a power crew, I've only ever seen them physically climb the pole only a handful of times if that much. Most just go up in the bucket, but I do remember one time seeing a lineman try to climb the pole and he fell but he caught himself.

It's important to know how to climb because sometimes linemen don't have a choice. You could be somewhere where you couldn't get the truck to the pole and you would have to be able to climb to do the job. Sometimes you might climb with the truck there, but regardless the reason we train climbing is because you have to be able to do it if it's needed, regardless of how often it's done in the industry today.

@@EliteLinemanTrainingInstitute yeah my papaw worked for my county utilities for 38 years and from hearing stories from him. I am planning on being a linemen one day, and i know there is much more to it than that. I got a job shadowing day at my school and i went to our utilities. I loved it and got to some hands on things. I changed out a fake switch and stuff like that. Thank you for responding to me. and have a great day

Sad to say, 99% of companies now use flagging companies, like the one I work for. We are contracted under Duke energy, carolina power, river city, an we even do underground fiber optics. Yall have a job to do. It our job as flaggers to keep yall safe.

I was a new lineman 30 years ago and did it for a number of years in the cable tv industry. We never had the secondary safety strap. Bare hands to grip better with was the rule for us...lol I enjoyed it very much especially the outdoors and the freedom but, also the satisfaction of getting a hard job done. Here's to the linemen!!

Those apprentice jokes help let you know if you got someone wanting to work or not. If they spend 30 minutes turning it they will most likely work. If they turn a couple of times and walk away your wasting your time .
