Hi Brett i know it's 2024 but have just been watching your 2011 trip to the USA. It was so enjoyable. The places & attractions you showed were quite amazing. Mate Barbara must have been a great mate & companion for. So sorry to hear about her passing. So Young yet so energetic. I bet you miss her heaps. I have also watched some of your Dad's presentations as well. Keep up the great work. Cheers From the East Coast. 👍👍👍👍👍

In the winter of 1973, dad and i drove from Perth to Melbourne in dads EJ Holden wagon. i was 13 at the time, and we found the highway so bad in places that dad sometimes dove on the side track the road graders were using. Dads work colleages had forewarned him not to stop for the local natives selling their "wares". I have also driven solo across this route in 1981 and "84.[the last trip with my dog]

35 years ago was lost out there. Thought we were going to die. heard a quite sound and slowly made our way to the top of a hill. When it got dark could see a dim light and headed that direction. A Pub in the middle of nowhere. With the nicest family living there. A cockatoo at the bar. We ate at the table with the family. They put me and my girl friend in a tin hut out side for the night. In the morning the waken to loud banging, was my car wheel being hammered back into shape. Sorry I forgot there names. I do remember sighing the guess book and they refused to take any money from us. Thank you. and thanks for the memory Brett Kibblewhite.

I have the full story of the building of this railway. My great grandfather worked on it. He went to Australia for the gold rush initially being miners from Wales. He joined the British army in Australia and fought with Anzacs. He has written the story of the camp, moving each week. How they filled their time, the heat, playing cards etc. Want to publish it as its the story of the building of the Nullabor railway.

Brett, I seem to recall that the Yellowdine roadhouse actually occupied the house across the road from the Shell servo, and I also recall that the soft drink I bought there came out of a kerosene driven fridge, circa 1970-71.

What was so stupid about that whole coastal strip Brett was that before becoming housing, like back in the 1970's, the rangers and police would fine you for riding or 4WDing there, even attempting to confiscate your bike, under the excuse that we were destroying the landscape. Then came all the bulldozers and road making equipment, destroying so much more than our bikes and cars ever did.

Stopped at the QANTAS museum about three years ago Brett and we were able to climb all thru the 747, but for an additional fee you could do a wing walk. Longreach is the best single town we have ever stayed in, given we did the Outback adventure over three days which also included a river cruise on a paddle wheeler, a ride in a genuine Cobb and Co coach (McKinnon and Co.)out onto the common (Those who sat outside the coach got a free post ride dusting off with a leaf blower !!) a movie (Smiley gets a gun) in an original outback open air movie theatre, a true outback evening meal (damper included) and bush poetry. Watched a great show at the Stockman's Hall of Fame also. Money, and time, well spent. On a previous trip we stopped to book into the (unpronounceable) Tjukayirla roadhouse (Known as TJ Roadhouse to frequenters) and said to the owner: "we want to book in for two nights please" he stood there sort of stunned and then came back with; "You really want two nights ? No-one stays two nights !" (Hotel California ?) We had arranged to do a day trip to Empress Springs (look it up) and come back for the second night.

Did this trip in '72 with mum and dad and my sister in the HG Kingswood. The old man wasn't overly enthused by the road and as it was December going over and January coming back to Sydney, needless to say it was hot. My only recollection was eating some dodgy Chinese in Kalgoorlie and throwing up and crapping by the side of the road. Fun Times!!

Having done somewhere near 100 return trips across the Nullarbor by road, this year wife and I moteled it for a change. It was interesting to see the lap you did thru the car park of the Nundroo motel. Back in 1970 on my first drive over, Nundroo was nick-named "Flagon Flats, due to the glass across the road from the motel, as that was the location where the inhabitants of Yalata (Aboriginal reservation) prefered to drink in an era prior to plasic wine casks. It would be a grave mistake, or an act of sheer desperation that would make anyone stop there overnight these days, the facilities being so run down that to me Nundroo is no more than a fuel stop, if you must. The other motels we used during the crossing Perth to Sydney and return were more than acceptable if some being a little pricey.

I travelled the road in the late 60s and into the early 70s, I made 9 crossings without a single problem. On one trip I noticed a nail in one tyre and changed it before it went flat. Boring as hell. The trick was to find the best speed to travel, so you went from the tops of the corrugations without going into the trough of a corrugations. I remember one trip I averaged 100 miles an hour over 12 hours. At some points I was doing 120 mph, sometimes faster. I’ve never found tyres as good as the ones I used then. B. F. Goodrich, they were bought out by Goodyear and the quality plummeted. People don’t believe me when I tell of being attacked by aboriginals camped on the side of the road throwing rocks and spears, I started carrying a rifle but never had to use it though.

Travelled across on this road in July 1969 and spent 5 days in Ivy Tanks removing an engine from a Morris 1100 and catching a coach into Perth. Travelled over it again in September 1970 with my new bride. A more uneventful trip than my first time.
