I'm hoping to bell the bottoms of some wide leg corduroys i have using this method. Im hoping to taper from either side to slim the most at the knee. Could you maybe make a video showing how youd go through this process? Tell what you learn along the way? Im new to sewing, so much so that i still do all my stitching by hand. so far ive repaired seams with ladder stitches and sewn patches, but this seems pretty ambitious for me to do by hand.

I had just been looking at a little gadget pouch a gadget I purchased came in. It was similar to yours but had the addition of a plastic welt around the outside, between the outsides but with its flap somehow covered by the lining inside. It also has a carrying loop stitched into the end of the zipper panel. The stitching is all so tight that even turned inside out I can't figure out how they got everything sewn in such a hidden way with the tolerances they did. Not a stitch is visible no matter how hard I try to spread the seams. After watching this excellent video, I have a an idea of how to do it but then getting that welt incorporated into it, not having a 'visible' separate bias binding on the inside (it seems to be incorporated into the lining), and a few other 'close tolerance' issues ...continue to leave me baffled. I sometimes watch the Asian videos of people making things, and am totally amazed at their skill and speed. The fact they all seem to be using straight stitch, high speed industrial machines that look like they were past their prime 20 years ago ...further amazes me. I'm a guy. Most projects for me have been boat tarps, convertible tops, seats and cushions, etc. I did all my own stuff first then for others, on a paid basis. My skill level was never great ...satisfactory but certainly not 'show' quality. Sewing intrigues me. Some little projects like this involve so many important sewing principles, that they make great platforms to learn and practice on. That pouch that intrigued me is like a Rubik's Cube of sewing. I wish I could send it to you so you could do a video on how to make them with those tolerances. :) All the best!

Watching a professional work is mesmerising! The number of hours experience they have at them machines is another level. From a personal experience I find simply attempting a new skill is always going to improve your sewing, even if the result isn’t quite perfect. If possible, try using ‘scrap’ materials from your stash to practice, unpick, repeat. I sometimes work on a technique for a few weeks till I approach the main project with my good materials when it’s something new. I don’t know the details of the specific pattern you’re using, but perhaps it would be possible to adjust the pattern and increase your seam allowance to give you more room to work? I hope you manage to figure out the method, because it feels so good when you finally do!

What is the rule for cuting circle skirt section on to the fabric please ? Is it necessary to have at least one length of the pattern piece alligned with the salvage of the fabric or not necessary ? Thank you
@elfiesew
@elfiesew 2 ай бұрын
In this case you want your centre front and centre back on grain (aligning with the selvage edge) as this is the most stable part of the fabric and your buttons are there. If you have a side zipper you can have your side seams on the grainline as an alternative. Full circle skirts can be forgiving though if you have limited fabric or a pattern you want to place in a certain way. At the least I would recommend always trying to cut in a symmetrical fashion to get the balance of how it falls equal.

Just subscribed, really, want to understand sewing patterns and the rules to sewing. Can you do a video at some point on how to trace a pattern to preserve its longevity or to use the different sizes on the pattern, and another on how to trace a pattern from a existing piece of clothing one own’s. Thanks in advance

Great tutorial! I will be working with metallic stretchy fabric, but not as flimsy as jersey. Do I need to make the dress on the bias or I can make it with the grain? I also want to add some flair at the bottom. It’s going to be a maxi dress.
@elfiesew
@elfiesew 2 ай бұрын
The bias cut dress has a distinct wrap motion to the body that differs from a stretch material cut in the same shape on the grain. If you want this look you'll still need to cut on the bias. However if your fabric doesn't have an even two way stretch, you may not get an even drape. It really depends on just how much stretch is in your fabric and the end look you're going for. You may need to size down your pattern in both cases to allow for the stretch.

Does the inseam line push up infront if you just do the outside?
@elfiesew

Yes the trousers will not hang straight with the leg as they should. However, if you are taking out very small amounts, depending on the trousers, you may be able to get away with just one seam. For best results I do recommend both.

This is such a well-made video. Thank you for the work you put into explaining things simply. I'd like to make a similar dress for myself, but I prefer a v-neck. Can you tell me how to modify the pattern to achieve that?
@elfiesew
@elfiesew 3 ай бұрын
If you follow the instructions up 3:53 for drafting the dress. Then adjust the top lines to suit the shape you desire rather than contining with the next cowl neck steps. So you may wish to extend the under arm curve closer to your arm pit for coverage. I would make a mockup of just the top section once you have altered it to check the fit is as you desire. As this is a bias dress it will still hug the body and depending on your bust size you may not require any darts.

Sounds great! Multiple layers of fabric can make gathers look bulky and fall awkwardly if too tightly bunched. I think you've got the right approach removing them, sounds like a lovely project!

This was very useful. Agree with buying brand name needles, because if you’ve spent the money to buy nice fabric it would be a shame to use a cheap needle that may harm the fabric, or indeed, your machine.

That feeling when when you get a run in your fabric from your needle is the worse. And it always happens in the most visible part of your garment. Never worth the risk!
