Been homeschooling for 17 years as well, and not only do I not buy it but I feel sad that others may put undue pressure on themselves and their families. Homeschooling is a life style and just like every day life is messy and full of tears and filled with joyful moments. It’s sacrificial and you often second guess yourself, but it’s honestly the most rewarding path if you are honest with yourself and definitely if you do it to lead your little ones to Christ ❤

I like the idea of having one on one time and of having the children. I think this is an area where I have been failing lately. My oldest two are 2 years apart in age but about the same level with reading and math so I’ve been teaching them together without a lot of progress. I don’t know why I didn’t think of just teaching them individually, but I think that would be a huge help for their confidence. So thank you for the suggestion. I also really like the idea of having the children create their own flash cards. I’m also not a natural at that type of learning but at least one of my children is. I would love to hear more about your mom’s creative ideas.

Thank you for your video,it’s so helpful. I’m just getting ready to start teaching my third boy to read. I really screwed up teaching my first two but lately we have been making progress despite my mistakes. It sounds like my mistakes were like yours. I wish a video like this existed when i was getting started and I hope this will help lots of new homeschooling families. I really like the train car flashcards you show in the video. I did download your free ones but I’m wondering if I’m supposed to teach the picture card alongside a letter card or separately at first?

alongside, so you can form a word association with the word on the card that sounds like the short sound of the letter.

Thank you! I am just starting out. I have noticed myself trying to power through, but felt compelled to continue. “I want to feel competent as a homeschooler” is a wonderful articulation that will help me so much! Slow and steady is so hard when others are constantly evaluating. It is so helpful to have it articulated that my role is to hover and assess. This was wonderfully encouraging!

Does anyone know a good, secular & comprehensive core knowledge workbook that I could use for my daughter. She’ll be starting 1st grade in August and I don’t want a bunch of clutter & an easy way to keep track of her progress. I also would like to find a comprehensive & affordable online option in case she wants a break from traditional school work. Any suggestions or advice would be well appreciated…

I just googled to make sure but Target has the Big First Grade book. Those have all the core subjects. We used versions like that in the past. Sometimes I rip out certain subjects to use. Also if you want free options teachers pay teachers has so many options. You’d just need to filter her grade and free. Then you just download and print. Edit: online options: abcmouse and ixl

Thank you for this! I know it’s been about a year since this video but I would really appreciate your thoughts on how to time block/manage my day with a full time 9-5 job which I work remote while taking care of my 8 month old. I am also trying to prepare for exams later this year. I am so overwhelmed all the time and feel like all my glass balls are falling and cracking. I’d appreciate any help you can give. Thanks in advance!

Late to watching, but I still enjoyed it! Loved the change in style. I also really liked seeing you make pumpkin pie! Is it common in Australia? I thought it was mostly an American thing. I remember someone from the UK commenting that it sounded like a very odd dish to them.

Thank you! Even my daughter is begging me for a "school room" because her homeschool friends have beautiful rooms and homes. It's just not my style, we have a family room with a nice table and a chalkboard we framed in on our wall, aside from that, thats about as much of a "school room" that we have. Would it be nice to have? Sure! But I think its important to teach them that just because they see a pretty room, doesn't mean their homeschool is what it should be. Not saying education doesn't happen there, but sometimes it can be just for show. We focus a lot on character, virtues, etc and it's not as pretty or easy as everyone makes it seem. Homeschooling IS hard and can lead to burnout and I don't think it's talked about because a lot of youtubers are trying to "sell" you something that just isn't realistic. Thank you for this video!

Totally agree with you on not starting kids too young, and it can be so hard to go against that 'norm' and people think your kids should be fluent readers by age 6 😆.

Thank you for your help and i appreciate hearing what you've learned. A lot of people have their kids spread out and although that has its own challenges i can't relate much at all. I have six kids 7 and under and my oldest is very advanced and I have a set of twins who want to be a part of everything and I have a struggling reader... I've been thinking about group learning and appointments, I just didn’t have a name for it. Do you have a video about how you make and keep to your timetable? Also, I find myself becoming very mentally exhausted after school time. What do you do to rejuvenate?

it is a struggle to teach so many little ones and I often do feel ready to end the day after school time! something I have started doing is school in the afternoons after I have cleaned and done around the house things, it makes me feel like when I finish the school time bustle it actually is time to begin the evening prep which for some reason makes it easier,I also switch my days up, I do a four day week, but I ay take the day off on a wednesday so I can have a break mid week.

I just love how “normal” this video is; just everyday life just as I do with my own children. Funny how you mention the cinnamon rolls. 😄 I’m American and I don’t know how people eat them for breakfast either! We only have them for breakfast on Christmas morning. Otherwise, I agree, they’re much too sugary and I much prefer them as an afternoon treat. Yours look delicious though!

Wayyy better as a snack! A Mini cinnamon roll can accompany a salty breakfast, but just a cinnamon roll for breakfast is too sweet! I thought I’d be fancy one year and make them for Christmas breakfast, and eating them after all the stocking candy made everyone sick 🤢😂 lesson learned!!

I realize this is a minor thing, but thank you so much for wearing sweatpants in this video lol. Sometimes I watch homeschool videos on YT and just seeing how well put together the moms are makes me question myself. I get that most of the time people want to present the ideal in their videos. It's just nice to see something real for a change.

We absolutely LOVE Mystery of History we are on year three on the first book. We have been taking it at a slower pace because we are historically reading through the bible (my daughter is 14 so we go much deeper into the theology and historical context). We are almost finished, we're on lesson 97. We have also enjoyed making a Book of Centuries. Simply Charlotte Mason has a free timeline printable, and we picked some timeline figures from online (My Homeschool Printables). They have them for all the books (pdf printable) your kids can color in. That way whenever we are studying another topic like science and we learn about a scientist or explorer or whatever... we can just add it to our timeline book and not have to wait until we study that time period❤.

I went to a public preschool when I was a child in the 1980s. We all learnt how to read, write and count at that age. Out of 35 children in my class, 6 or 7 got to skip the 1st year of school because we were already proficient in reading. That theory about children not being ready to read at a young age sees strange to me.
@thesimplemamma

some children may be ready, I don't say that all aren't, what I do say is that when you are a homeschooling mother, there can be a lot of stress to teach early, and if you can, go for it, but if you can't, then you don't need to, your child will be fine, if they learn early or not. I myself have in my own children, some that are ready early and some that aren't so I understand your experience.

I'm so burnt out. My kids are 8, 5, 3, 18M, and a newborn on the way. My toddler just started climbing out of his crib and won't nap and is getting into everything. My 3 year old pesters her sisters and she does it in church. I'm feeling so out of control. I trained my baby when he was young and he listens well but it's slipping up. It's my first year homeschooling and I'm loosing my mind. I have read all of the parenting books and tried them all. My favorite parenting book is called parenting a house united but my house is so chaotic that I can't even remember the different steps to teach a child I can't even stay calm long enough to even implement those practices. It makes sense to do something like that when the kids are older but right now I need obedience I don't have the mental bandwidth to explain myself every time. I do understand that calmness is a must for me but I need a system I'm going to stick to that isn't a 12-step process.
