Gord this is the work of a master. Where can a beginner source stones for a project like this? 4:1 sand and cement it looks like from previous comments. Any other tips you would suggest for someone doing a small DIY backyard stairs?
@gordchapman34696 күн бұрын
I'm not sure what the rock situation in your area is, but here we often have to blast rock to make way for a house foundation. There are many places that stock stone from the blasting. Choose rocks that are squarish or rectangularish, or at least have one 90 degree corner for the front of the steps. Good luck!

Thank you, and yes, it's an amazing garden that the homeowner has been working on for decades! The owner actually used to be the previous owner's landscaper, and helped create the garden. Eventually, he bought the house from the homeowner.. I've done a few smaller projects in this garden; have a look at one of my older videos, called "Working in a Japanese Garden". It takes a longer stroll through this amazing garden. Thanks for watching!

Ok, 2nd. Attempt. I'm Angi. A 30yr. Local artist and resident of this coastal area . 2yrs. Ago I cleared away weeds & trash across the street from the 101 CAFE on coastHwy city side strip and started a Rock Garden that was doing well, was liked, and creating Unity in the Community. I couldn't have been more pleased. Dave, your story inspired me and has given me courage to carry on with it the past 2yrs. 2022-2024 . Then April 1st SOMEbody who had been complaining to the city, somehow succeeded in getting g Every single painted Rock Removed! I'm so heartbroken. Any advise will be most welcome. I already have a petition of around 170 +/- signatures supporting me. But how did or why did someone hate it so much they had to get it shut down? I'm at a loss! Your garden is so incredibly Awesome!! Help!😊😢❤I don't know how to get in touch with you...personally &would really love to meet with you.
@gordchapman3469Ай бұрын
Hi, actually, I'm not Dave. I just visited Dave's Rock Garden a few months ago when I visited San Diego. I do sympathize with you and your rock garden. Who the heck would complain about a frickin rock garden? A sad, sad person indeed! Good for you for trying to beautify your community! As for getting in touch with Dave, I'd just keep googling. He seems pretty well known in the Encinitas area and has been in the newspaper, and maybe even TV. Good luck!

So it basically goes in the following order? Please correct me if I'm wrong: 1. Dig out ~6" in the shape of the footprint of the stairs 2. Lay compacted gravel base 3. Lay risers, along with dirt and concrete mix (4:1 fine sand:Portland cement) 4. Lay flagstones Questions: A. Did you use a formula to calculate the rise of each step? If so, what was it? B. Did you have to cut the flagstones at all? If so, what tool/s did you use? C. When exactly are you using cement versus when are you filling in with dirt? It looks like you're using both as you build up the brick risers.
@gordchapman34693 ай бұрын
To figure out the rise, measure the total rise of the entire set of steps, and divide that total by 6-7 inches, which is the average step height. You may have to adjust until it works out evenly. For example, if the total rise is 30 inches, that would be five 6 inch high steps, or if your total rise is 35 inches, that would be five 7 inch high steps. Yes, I do cut the flagstone, but as little as possible so it looks natural. I use an angle grinder with a 7 inch diamond blade. I never use dirt to fill in under the steps. I always use compacted gravel to build up under the cement. Thanks for your interest! Will you be doing something like this at home?
@flat6fever680Ай бұрын
@@gordchapman3469 That's about the easiest way I ever heard someone explain how to calculate amount of stairs and height of risers. Thanks I'm looking to do some of these around our house.
