I absolutely agree with all your points mentioned in this video. I'm not sure how old you are (I'm 28), but you may like the books iGen and The Anxious Generation. I'm right on the cusp of being a Millennial and a Gen Z-er, so find the insights in these books so interesting. I haven't had social media in at least 4 years. The biggest thing for me looking now from the outside, is when I'm together with friends and some of my friends know the events happening in the other friends' lives, but not from them actually telling them, but from seeing it posted! Now it's so bizarre to me that you know you "friend" went to Cancun, but she didn't actually tell you. It feels so much more meaningful to find out these things in real life, in real time. I find myself being able to sit in stillness more. It's OKAY to not know what everyone is doing every minute and jomo (the joy of missing out) is something I really enjoy. I think it goes hand in hand with physical minimalism, in that is clears the mind of a constant flow of erroneous information. Long story short, more meaningful connections and conversations with few people beats seeing the "curated" lives of many people.

My android phone died and I bought an iPhone 13. But I didn't download an internet browser for it so my iPhone 13 is a dumb phone. I can still take video and photos with it but I can upload them to the internet at a time that suits me. Also my phone is not tracking my every movement or reporting my every location to an internet service provider. Many of the apps the phone came with are gone for I have no need for them. When I'm driving I turn the phone to silent and if a message comes in the phone springs into life and I ignore it for I'll look at that message when it suits me too. Unlike so many others my phone doesn't control me I control my phone. During the pandemic lock downs I didn't QR code once for I walked up to a QR code and people thought I was doing the QR code thing when I took a photo of the black square. But once a week I deleted all the QR photos I'd taken. Sure I wore a mask and obeyed lock down restrictions but the authorities had no idea where I'd been or what time I'd been there for I'm an individual and flatly refuse to be part of the "community" and the authorities will only get to know what I decide to tell them. I recently attended a course at work and to access this course on an iPad we had to QR code and this person running the course said "just like you did in the pandemic". So you can imagine her gobsmacked shock when I told her I didn't once QR code in the pandemic for I'll decide what the state gets to know not the state. This is why so many people got caught because the state knew exactly where they were. Flying under the radar is a wonderful liberating feeling.

Change that to black-and-white!

I felt heavily convicted a few weeks ago to get off social media. I have a ministry on Instagram and Facebook. Both are good. But I'm beginning to realize they were causing me to put my family and home on the back burner. I'm praying over the summer and asking God if I should give up social media permanently. I really enjoyed your video. For someone so young you have a lot of wisdom.

My family is working on this exact thing but now I feel even more motivated to get the junk out and make room for a clear mind, clutter free spaces, and only keep the useful and necessary things. Love this! I got married as I turned just 20 and almost immediately was pregnant with baby #1. I was so upset because in my mind being a mom was for “older” women and I wasn’t ready to feel old yet! But getting married young and having babies has made my life full of experiences! Almost like we got an early jumpstart on life. We’ve moved half a dozen times, owned and sold houses, started companies, had a “mid-life crisis” and started 100% over and now adding our 5th baby this year and I’m still 29. It’s definitely not been easy and we’re not wealthy by any means but we’ve lived so much life compared to so many of our friends and siblings our ages (and older) who have waited to start families, it’s hard to relate sometimes. All that to say, my 20’s were in no way ruined by being pregnant and/or having babies the whole time like the world would like to tell you it would be. Looking forward to my 30’s!

This is SO good! I never thought of it this way. Two days ago I took all social media off my phone because I found myself addicted to it, just randomly opening the apps. But my issue is comparing myself to others. Always seeing what everyone is doing and feeling like I’m not enough, like I’m not a good enough mom, person, etc. it has become an idol. People have become an idol because of it. Love this. I relate so much. I deleted my IG when I realized I was literally thinking through a filter of “what will my next post be”. I too was obsessed with myself and kind of horrified when I realized it was on display for the world to see. I am back on IG as a way to keep in touch/available to the people I’ve crossed paths with but I have zero posts and plan to keep it that way. Keep your life private! It’s far more special and you have endless conversations when you get to reconnect with people.

Hi Seleena! I’ve missed your video’s so so much! I too quit social media over a year ago now and it has helped my anxiety levels so much. I also do not consume the news at all. I feel like being exposed to the news and the burdens of this world on a daily basis as well as comparing ourselves to others just isn’t doing our mental health any favors. We were never meant to carry all that weight on our shoulders. Now I only use KZfaq within limits and strictly follow accounts that inspire me and share the same values. Some of which are yourself, Madisun Gray, Jessica Rothley and the Elliott Homestead. So glad to see your face again. ❤
