Hey Dylan, You said you set your IS0 to 400 for the portra 800. Did you let the lab know you pulled the film? or did you just let them develop it at box speed (800)? Turned out great!
@DylanSpitz
@DylanSpitz 14 күн бұрын
Thanks! I actually develop and scan everything at home! But no, I wouldn’t tell the lab anything. The purpose of rating it at 400 for me is to purposely overexpose by about 1 stop. To me that’s when the portra films really perform their best and have cleaner shadows.

Dylan,what an excellent, highly informative video. I've got a few digital cameras both full frame and medium format, but have got back into 35mm film in the last few years when I bagged a cheap Leica R8 ( lenses expensive ), followed by a Contax RTS III ( lenses cheap as chips ). Your pictures have convinced me that an up and coming visit to the Scottish Isles could do with the medium format film look. Simply stunning. Thank you.

I live on Hat Island which you can see from Langley on Whidbey! Our home is on the top of the island looking out over Camano in the center with a view of Langley to the left and Mt Baker to the right. I do photography every day out here usually. Just got a 200mm to 500mm lens for my Nikon D5300 some weeks ago...need to get a big zoom lens for the Sony A73. Cool you shoot film! Saw this on my recommended videos and thought it would be nice to see how others view our area. From the dock and the pier you went to, you can see our island! Look absolutely amazing. I'm pretty jealous of how gentle the light seems. I live in Australia and it is just savage half the time so you get really harsh brights and deep shadows. The colours end up super saturated which looks incredible sometimes but it is a little unforgiving (because I'm not very skilled). I only see light like this on overcast days where everything just looks a bit drab.

I brought my Blackmagic 6k pro on a recent trip and it was an ordeal, and I thought that bringing my URSA mini would be a trudge. When I came back from that trip I bought the XT-5 coming from already loving my XE-3. I wouldn’t use XT-5 for professional video work, but as a hybrid travel camera it is indeed perfect. Bringing cinema cameras on such short personal trips means you’re having to swap batteries, worry about cables and weight, having to take things off and put them on again, so XT-5 comes as a relief.

Thank you for the kind words! I’ve been in video production for around 12 years now, far before I took an interest in photography, so I think it’s just something that’s come from experience in the industry. With that said, understanding frame rates, 180 shutter, proper exposure, shooting in log and the basics of color grading are all key foundational concepts that I’d start learning first.

As a photographer living on Whidbey (I'm like 3 minutes from your airbnb lol), I really enjoy seeing your take on the things I take for granted these days. You picked a fairly dramatic time to come, we don't get much snow, but winter definitely has its beautiful moments here. Good choices checking out Bowman Bay and Rosario. If you ever come back to visit there's a lot more around that's worth checking out, especially if you aren't opposed to hiking
