A great slice of an awesome experience growing up in the Marion section, with some of the nicest people I have ever met to this very day. Especially like the picture of my brother from another mother....'Twinnie", John sporting his Yankee Jersey, and so many other faces throughout this. Great throwbacks recreating the sharpness of memories that sometimes fade, but never go away!

When Pete is in town. He stops by to say hello to my father on Williams Ave where we both still live since 1972.... I have Pete's old sign and the homemade wooden booster seat I sat on when I was a kid.

Almost died there in the nineties. I was homeless living out there. New houses, booker T, Montgomery.. who knew that I would wind up like that and I wasn’t even 21. 😢 I can’t glorify that place- I’m just glad I survived my childhood in the environment These days, I practically close my eyes when I have to drive on the highway to the tunnel. Left in 1998 and never looked back, thank God.

Funny - we who grew up there moved away with our kids. Then we raise our suburban children who want to go to college so they can live in the city. 😂 from the heights

Greenville Jersey City has many beautiful places. I like the Ferris Triangle Park, Columbia Park has many cherry blossom trees🌼 🌸, Ocean Avenue by Linden Ave looks nice. Am actually from Union City, (about 5 miles north) and I visited and walked the other day, and I like it!

Conroy's Tavern on Newark Ave at the 5 corners across from the public library. Pre prohibition, than a speakeasy reopened from 1934 to 1987 when a robbery and twin shooting forced my father to close it down due to a lawsuit from one of the victims. Ball and a beer place with sawdust on the floor, serving eye openers starting at 6:30AM to men going to operate heavy machinery at the many factories and railroads around Jersey City. One bathroom, no door, men only till the law changed in the mid 70s Met my wife at Narrowbacks which was the hangout for the new drinker.

The candy store seen twice in this video located on the corner of York St and Henderson St (Marin Blvd) was owned by my cousins (Torres family). I worked there for a few years in the late 70’s. Two stores not shown here are Ray’s store on the corner of Grand St and Grove St. That spot is now the Taqueria Mexican restaurant. The other is on Erie St between 3rd and 4th st, right across from the old PS #2 school. Not sure who owned it, but I remember calling it Woody’s. I remember going to that bodega from 1973 to 1977. Pinball after school and on weekends were a thrill back then. Ooops. A third one was on the corner of Second St and Erie. It was in the basement level of the building. Now I think that structure was modified where you can’t even tell there was a bodega there in the past. You had to go down a couple of steps to get in, just like the florist spot on the corner of Jersey Ave and First St. It’s called Bouquets and Baskets now, but that wasn’t their name earlier. They must have changed it not too long ago. Can’t remember it now.

That store owned by your cousins was my favorite after school spot. I went to OLC and we always went there... Please let the Torres family know that I would love to feature just their store and if they can share any photos, I will make sure we honor their history on York and Henderson as a tribute to their old store. I appreciate you sharing your feedback.

@@wegrewupinjerseycity4211 Sure will. I'll see if any of their kids are on Facebook. I remember also the bingo nights at OLC. As soon as the evening ended, POW!... a flood of women buying cigarettes! You had to be good at spotting all the brands on the storage bin, which only had the bottom parts of the cigarette brands exposed. By the way, I forgot to mention, they had moved their business from that spot to 177 York St. The apartment building they owned where I lived (how I started working at their bodega) that had a commercial spot on the ground level, which I believe was an old plumbing store. Would be interesting to look that up. That house was right next to OLC. Shoot... right before that, I lived at 78 Erie St (1976 - 1977) where there was another bodega (where I did NOT work 😆). It was nice having the playground down the block next to P.S. #2. That's no longer there... neither are my old time friends. 🥲
