I’m surprised to hear that the GGR race organisers don’t fund the emergency comms equipment. I understand there are two comms bags (from hearing about Tapio’s experience)- is any of this equipment provided by GGR themselves or all self funded?

I think you spent too much. One can do GGR with the most expensive furlering setup or one can do it with a set of hanks, with self-tailing winches, or basic winches; with a raincoat or with Zhik foulies. So it depends on how passionate one is about entering this race. IMHO however I think a realistic figure is $150,000 with all the labor (installing, testing, refitting, painting, grinding, servicing engine) done by myself. A lot of equipment can be found pre-owned, used and in excellent condition, but for certain refits new materials and a professional is a must, i.e. all new rigging, new furlers, new, rebuilt and re-installed sea cocks, new or fairly new set of sails. Everything else can be comparatively shopped for discounts, used equip, etc. Finding the right boat for half the cost is doable I would say, just a lot of legwork, the first year should be spent moving to a boat-rich community.

After seeing guy de beur's and kristan's performances, I think the big heavy boat is the way to go for GGR. It's also not the only sailing race out there. Looking forward to hearing about your future sailing endeavors
