The team that Len built 😂 straight down to division two. The club should have stuck with Alan Durban

I was around in 73 staying in Solar House in the town centre, before leaving England in 1975. But I cannot recall the world cup fever at all, probably because I was not a football fan. I only ever went to one match in my life, at Roker Park and then only because I was dating Elizabeth Taylor - not the movie start but the daughter of George Taylor, football commentator on Tyne Tees TV who gave us tickets!

One of the most famous commentators of all time.....'some of the crowd are on the pitch...etc....' Kenneth Wolstenholme. He was painful to listen to. 😂

An epic Second Division promotion clash, & wasn't it voted MOTD's "match of the season" for 1974-75? There were more than 60,000 inside OT for the game, I just wish I could have been one of them!

Maybe not a surprise, given what was at stake for the two clubs, ie promotion and survival.

Vic Halom was the manager of Rochdale FC in 1984 - I left school at 15 to be an apprentice footballer with the 4th division club. He was a good manager and still tough to play against in 5-a-side games. Vic was built for the number 9 shirt and had a great touch, as well as power. I think he is one of the last few from this team still living. Great game to watch! 1973 final was even better.

At first I thought, 23 minutes of highlights - great! But after showing every injury, booking and flashpoint in full detail, it was probably less than 10 minutes of action. BT, or TNT as they are now apt to call themselves, once again flatter to deceive. 👎

Plenty of coaches going to from Ninian Park that day going to see that game, and plenty of coaches going to and from Fellows Park as Newport County supporters went to Walsall to watch them clinch promotion. From what I was told by Newport County who went to Walsall they passed many Sunderland supporter coaches there and back.

Love this. I remember Sunderland coming to Maine road and drawing. 2 all. Went to the replay at roker and Sunderland hammered us 3/1. The atmosphere was something I will never forget. And since that day Sunderland always been my other team. 👍🏻

I was there on the night in the Clockstand Paddock along with over fifty thousand others. Also against Luton, Arsenal and Leeds. That season has kept me going through thick and sometimes very thin times.

Sunderland support is up with the very best. They took thousands in Leeds in the 70 and 80s. For some reason back then Leeds never travelled in big numbers back then.

I was there. I was at the front of the Main Stand, about mid-way between Hawley and the goal, at a position where I can remember I had to move my head fully from right to left to follow the ball into the net after he struck it. Beauty!
