How do you check the amperage on a 240 volt system? Do you add both of the hots together after you check the amp draw with your amp clamp?

Oh man, you stopped the video right when you were getting ready to explain about the wiring being bad! That's exactly what I was waiting to hear you talk about! You really do a good job explaining this stuff to some of us novice's out here! What's up man? My name is Mike and I live in St. Charles, Missouri, I live with my room mate in a doublewide mobile home that was manufactured back in 1993 when all they used were those stab in the back receptacle's, every one of them are the stab in type! About 2 month's ago we had a bit of a cool spell and my room mate plugged in her space heater and all the socket's in her room all the way to the living room stopped working, along with the ceiling fan, the porchlight outside of the main entrance and 5 more receptacle's in the living room! I figured the space heater probably couldn't handle the load, so I went to the breaker box to reset the circuit breaker, when I opened the door on the panel box all of the circuit breaker's were in the on position! I found the one that controls her bedroom and I manually turned it off then on again to try & reset it but nothing happened! I just decided to pull the breaker in question and ran up to my home depot to buy a new one, it is a double 15 amp and each switch can be turned off & on independant of each other. I installed the new one and, "wah lah", everything worked again and I was the hero !!! 3 night's later she went to bed and decided to read a book so she went to turn on a little led lamp beside her bed and all of the light's and receptacle's went out again, a little led lamp overloaded the brand new breaker I just replaced 3 day's earlier !!! I watched all the diy video's on "You Tube" and I heard nothing good about these back stab receptacle's and I intend to replace all of them soon just to save myself more headache's in the future! I seem to think that one of these receptacle's has probably got a short where the wire was stabbed in at and replacing the receptacle should solve the problem, the only thing is I don't know which one it is so I'm just gonna start replacing them all ! I watched your video and you seem very wise when it comes to this stuff and I would respect your advice with this issue! Would it be too much trouble to get your opinion on this please, I would greatly appreciate it my friend! What would you do in this situation ??? Thanks a million bro! ✌

So sorry about Bill’s passing at such a young age. Just watched this video and read in comments his passing. Bill’s video was easy to understand.

Neutral is the return path for single phase power. It only carries current on two phase if there is an imbalance in the load on each leg. Neutral is hot there to protect against lightning.

Maybe show where you have the dial set on the meter next time. Good info here but some will need to know where to set the meter to get the reading.

I don't know how much circuit analysis is taught in the trade. The fact that so many electricians (at least new ones) assume right off the bat that neutral does not carry current or has voltage makes me wonder if they even teach circuit analysis at all.

My Wall Outlet doesn't have an outlet connected to the Breaker. It's only a Breaker for each room in house. I have a telephone, which is connected to a wall outlet, and it doesn't give a dial tone. Phone battery has life. I want to ask you, I exchanged a different modem for a One Line modem. I had to replace Cable boxes because of this modem. Now, my Kitchen telephone has no dial tone at all because I replaced the router modem. Did I lose my telephone Jack in Wall due to this exchange? Thank You!

What happens to the 2 amps when it gets back to the transformer center tap?
@nhitc6832
@nhitc6832 23 күн бұрын
This is alternating current, so at one moment, the 2A joins with current of L1 at the center tap, and then go out to L2 with a combined current of 7A. And when the current reverses, the current on L2 split at the center tap. 2A goes into the neutral, and 5A goes to L1. And of course, this oscillates 60 times a sec.

I have to watch all his videos because I bought a house in South Carolina and I don't know a whole lot about electrical but I do know that the framing addition was done wrong. Whoever ran all the ducting for the HVAC under the house did it wrong. The plumbing I'm going to have to tear out and redo. And whoever put the metal roof made a mess and now I've got dry rot. I don't have the money to hire an electrician I'm a disabled vet on a small income but I got to make sure this place is safe....

Your version is confusing and wrong. Aps ia across a voltage and load. If load and viltage is the same, the aps will be the same too. And it doest balance a shit.

You may have finally answered a question for me, if a reduced current is flowing on the neutral back to the transformer. The house wiring and the plug set for my electric range contains two #6, red & black, Hot conductors and two #8 wires for the neutral (white) and ground (bare). So, the neutral and ground are sized accordingly to carry less current....correct?

What? You missed it. The second one is also just two bare wires that are crossed without a screw or nail, after something pops. You did say "keeps tripping", yes? Well thats usually because hot is crossed with another.

I just think of neutral as a path of unused electron flow back to transformer, if that flow were to be stopped, then the load of appliance will not work because there is not electron flow. I’m not a electrician I do hvac, so I’m probably wrong

My easy understand - Neutral is a pathway back to Transformer at stastion. Same understanding that, if we physically touch a Live wire, without touching the ground, ie with insulation like wearing rubber sandals, we dont get electrocuted. Neutral pathway is not created. So , Live is incoming, N is outgoing.

Bill, I just swapped out a light switch. The old one had a receptacle for a neutral wire. Ground was attached to the electric box. The new one I put on is an old conventional flip switch that has a screw for line, load and ground but not neutral. i simply capped the neutral is that ok?

This is a dumb video. Because - Typically, three-prong outlets last around 15 years, but they may last longer if they're rarely used. In comparison to three-prong outlets, GFCI outlets last between 15 to 25 years.

I need tbe next video 😅😂😭 I have taught myself so much today and fixed/repaired/replaced so many things in my home... But the kitchen light has been completely uninstalled, live wires have been tested, breakers have been flipped ans tested ans still no power coming through. I was really hoping to be able to skip getting an electrician as I'm broke and HAVE to learn these skillsets. Thank you so much. Hopefully I can find your other video here in a sec and its something as simple as a fuse issue at the breaker box that I missed or something i havent tried yet or didnt do correctly. ( Also, maybe my balllast ISN'T out afterall. Either way, im upgrading to a new LED fixture when this all said and done lol)

So incredibly sorry to hear the passing of this man. Does anyone know what happen and if it was electricity related? In this video he mentioned you could die if you get electrocuted by the outlet. Is 120volts enough to kill a man or would it be enough to shock him

just what i needed to learn to verify what i need to do to check for a bad GFI outlet.. one thing he didn't point out that is very important regarding the voltmeter is to ALWAYS plug in the black lead FIRST either to neutral or ground... plugging in the RED lead first will cause the black lead to be hot and could arc against anything that could ground it - like yourself - think of it as same as taking the proverbial butterknife and sticking it in the outlet

The ongoing debacle of what the neutral does and does current flow in a balanced load neutral is a prime example of the fact that no one knows exactly what current is. Current is the hypothetical demon lurking behind our assumptions that we think current flow is electron flow. How then does a 2-phase balanced load cancel current flow at the mid point ? Do 120 degree out of phase electrons cancel each other out at the midpoint node ? No they can't, not mathematically, not by vector analysis anyway. So where does the residual current go ? Think about it.
