Nice job. You might want to consider attaching a 6:1 vernier drive to that capacitor. It would give you a little more precision in the tuning.

This a is a wrong way to build a short wave antena, you will never have a good signal, the short wave radios works on band wave lenghts of 60, 49 , 31, 25,19,16, 13 and 11 meters and in order to get a good reception the wire lenght must be designed at least to pick up a 1/2 wave lenght of the electromagnetic signal short wave; I have a ZENITH transoceanic radio fully restored wich has a very good reception stations from Cuba, Spain, Checoslovaquia, China, Rumania, USA, Francia, Brazil; I must tell that today there are few countries transmiting in short wave in comparation with the 40's, 50's, 60', 70's.

You are talking about "wire lenght" which corresponds to a wire antenna as its name indicates, this is an "active -tunable- loop antenna"...and please believe me when I tell you that I have awesome results! (As you can see and hear in the video!😉) Thank you for commenting my video. 73's!

Excellent video tutorial! Cool, I'm planning on building one soon for my Tecsun PL-310ET. I'm looking at your plans and also the instructions at www.kr1st.com/swlloop.htm to figure things out. What range variable capacitor should we use? Is the coupling loop electrically isolated from the main loop? Does it have to be at the side or can it be central of the main loop? Does it have to be 1/5th the size? Thanks.

Thanks for subscribing to my channel, hope you enjoy your visits there. Interesting, I first saw this type of tethered flight as a young kid, about 50 years ago now! Did not know it is still practised! Nice field you are flying at, looks like it is built specially for this kind of flying! We flew on the town's cricket field which was ideal since it is an open field, about 100m diameter.

Try to connect this antenna to: 1. the crystal radio. 2. simple trf radio with 1 fet (2sk241, 2sk544, mpf102, bf998, etc)

You should have left those 'vanes' alone and connected each end of the loop to the STATORS, totally ignoring the connection to the frame..ie the ROTORS You would then have had a most desirable 'split stator' tuning cap. Far more balanced. A few things:- It would have instantly halved the max (fully closed) capacity as you clearly seemed to have required. This would have reduced the range covered by the loop (so did your hacking out precious vanes) but also reduced the "sharpness" of the tuning which can be a bit vicious on loops. I see that yours has a reduction drive but t'aint always enough! It would also have removed the HIGH circulatory RF currents from passing through the wiper from the rotors to the frame, an adequate path for received sigs but quite resistive ( worse if old and dirty) and V. lossy for the high currents caused by transmitting with a very high Q loop. Oh Boy..They're high! I'm guessing a bit with the next one..It would probably (possibly) have increased the effective spacing of the tuning capacitor, making it a higher working voltage. This would reduce to an appreciable degree, the risk of flash over (These loops generate a whole lot of volts at their ends (When I was a smoker, I could draw off an arc and light a fag from mine!!!!) The 'split stator' configuration would possibly have increased the power rating of your Magloop before arcing over and preserved the original state of your very precious capacitor. Ya can take 'em off easily but ya cain't put 'em back on. Caps of this quality stopped being readily available years ago. Moral?..investigate more deeply before proceeding, especially when you intend to make a video to advise others! Good Luck & 73 G3NBY Not Born Yesterday

Gracias por tu amable comentario! la verdad no existen planos para la construcción de la antena puesto que la única medida "crítica" es el perímetro del loop, que en mi caso es 10 pies (3 mts). Hola, si, como lo mencioné en mi primera respuesta, es 10 pies de perímetro...la frecuencia de resonancia dependerá de los valores máximos y mínimos de tu capacitor (una vez conozcas las características de tu capacitor, es fácil encontrar algunas calculadoras para este tipo de antenas online) Suerte con tu proyecto!

Una antena magnetica colocada paralela a tierra, es decir, horizontal, recibe bien señales polarizadas verticalmente (las de antenas normales verticales) y además en los 360º, y si se inclina pues bien señales que llegan desde el horizonte por edificio de edificios de enfrente. Si se coloca vertical el aro recibe bien las ondas polarizadas horizontalmente (pero con un azimut muy concreto como ocurre con las antenas de las radios transitor de ferrita normales y hay que girarla para apuntar a la emosora)

Great results with the loop! I did notice that at about 2:35 when you try out the whip antenna on the Grundig set, you still have the switch set to EXT so it wouldn't work anyway. :O)

+Ronan Cantwell Yes, you are right, but I'm pretty much showing that is the actual antenna which is working most than trying to do a comparison, with the whip antenna I just got RFI at that place of the house. Thanks for your kind comments!

+Juan David Barrada Yeah, like I said, good video. I might build one of those as they do seem to be the best option for limited space. One question though: Do you continously have to retune the antenna when tuning around on the radio or can you leave it set and then peak it when you reach a station of interest?
